Today we celebrate the victory of the Battle of Kettle Creek. Another history lesson for Washington Wilkes County.

The Battle of Kettle Creek, fought on February 14, 1779, was a significant Patriot victory in Georgia during the Revolutionary War, where American militia led by Andrew Pickens, Elijah Clarke, and John Dooly defeated a larger Loyalist force under Colonel James Boyd. The Patriots launched a surprise attack, routing the Loyalists who were on their way to join the British in Augusta, boosting Patriot morale and hindering British control in the backcountry. The battle resulted in heavy Loyalist casualties, including the death of Colonel Boyd, and freed Patriot prisoners held by the Loyalists. This was the first major Patriots victory deemed in “Georgia backcountry”. This battle secured that the British could not overtake the interior of our State. This battlefield is a National Landmark.

It's not every day you see two houses joined as one, but Saragreen in Washington, Georgia is just that. It is believed to be made up of two Federal style houses, most likely built before 1828, which were moved from unknown locations and connected in the middle. In its early days, the home was a simple one-story farmhouse with a one-story porch across the front. As with several other homes in the area, the exterior was updated in the 1880s.
