Summit Legal Aid partnered with Fayette County Uniters to create Rebuild and Rise, a community-centered reentry initiative. The initiative is designed to strengthen reentry resources, expand opportunities, and build stronger pathways to stability for individuals and families returning to their communities after incarceration, probation, or other involvement with the criminal legal system. Important Update from Pennsylvania Department of Human Services:

All County Assistance Offices, the PA DHS Customer Service Center, and the PA DHS Helpline currently have a delayed opening to the public of 11:00 a.m. on Thursdays. Starting Nov. 5, 2026, they will have a delayed opening of 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays.
The public will not be able to enter offices, and calls will not be accepted before 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays due to staff training. This will not impact hours of operation on other days of the week. Thursday delayed openings will continue for the foreseeable future.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue provides funding to Low Income Taxpayer Clinics so they can offer free legal assistance on state tax matters. Last week, Summit Legal Aid staff gathered in Harrisburg on September 17th and 18th for the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network (PLAN) Statewide Training Conference.

This year was special because the statewide conference included the Annual Excellence Awards ceremony. Megan Williams, Summit Legal Aid’s Public Benefits Paralegal, received the Champion for Justice Award for her outstanding and vital advocacy for clients over the past 25 years!!

We are extremely saddened by the loss of former Summit Legal Aid attorney John Perrott. After battling a difficult illness, he passed away last month at home with his family by his side.

John believed in fairness, justice, and kindness, and he dedicated nearly 40 years working with us in Uniontown, helping those who needed it the most. He was a mentor and good friend to each of his co-workers, with his booming voice and spirited personality bringing a smile to everyone’s faces.

John’s family meant everything to him, and our hearts go out to his wife and children. While John will be sorely missed by his friends and loved ones, his memory will live on through each of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
