Lauren Sweeney Brown, Esq. Attorney advocating for workers and consumers who puts family first and helps clients do the same. Licensed in Pennsylvania, license pending in West Virginia.

Attorney and lifelong advocate for life’s underdogs. I fight for working people, consumers, and anyone facing an uphill battle against powerful interests. Before practicing law, I was an award-winning investigative journalist for local television—committed to uncovering the truth, amplifying unheard voices, and holding the powerful accountable. I still occasionally freelance for The New York Times

, fueled by a lasting passion for informing the public and telling stories that matter. Above all, I’m a proud wife and mother. Family comes first, and the role I cherish most is being there for the people I love. Everything I do—professionally and personally—is grounded in that purpose.

My boss is the best!! No, really -- he's been named Lawyer of the Year. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of injured workers across the Commonwealth who can attest to how great an attorney Eric Betzner is. He is also just a great all around human being. So honored he actually lets me work for him.

At 27 years old, I was given the immense responsibility of field producing one of the most significant murder trials of the decade.
For weeks, our team worked 17-hour days in the sweltering Florida heat, reporting from a makeshift mobile setup as the world watched the Casey Anthony trial unfold.
When the verdict came down, Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her three-year-old daughter.
Just days later, I flew back to Southwestern Pennsylvania for my brother’s wedding at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Fast forward 15 years, and life brought me full circle.

This past weekend, the Washington County Bar Association invited me to speak at its Summer Bench Bar at — you guessed it — Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia.

I had the absolute privilege of sharing some of my TV news “war stories,” including the Casey Anthony trial, and reflecting on how those experiences shaped the lawyer I am today.

Journalism taught me how to stay focused when the stakes are high, make decisions under immense pressure, meet impossible deadlines, ask difficult questions and — perhaps most importantly — be fully present when someone is counting on you. But that career also almost broke me physically and mentally. I walked away because I knew that no career was worth my personal well-being.

Those lessons have followed me into my legal career and continue to shape the way I advocate for my clients.

It was an even greater privilege to share the panel with Susie Brookman of the Wellness Warrior Group, who brought an important perspective on the physiological impact that demanding professions like journalism and law can have on our bodies and minds. She also shared key indicators when you may be experiencing signs of vicarious trauma and how to check in with yourself to put your well-being first.

Fifteen years, two careers and one very full-circle trip back to Oglebay.
I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences — and the people — that have brought me here.

I cannot believe my baby girl is now 7. I'm a little late on posting because we have been celebrating ALL month.

She got to blow out her candles 4 times for extra good luck. The first time was a surprise when her favorite restaurant brought her an ice cream treat the night before her birthday. We rang in her actual Birthday morning with a donut cake , a trip to Idlewild and a chocolate cake with Nonni & Pap Pap. Finally, we got to have some of her best friends out to "Pap Pap's River House" as she calls it for a fun celebration.

We love you just the way you are Dolores Jean - our spunky smart and spirited little lady. She may be small but she is mighty and she continues to impress us with her resilience every day.

If this isn't the most working Mom summer pic!

Truth is my kids were not even playing at this park, I just decided I wanted to be in the fresh air for a meeting about "Wellness".

Thank you to Dean Lynn LeMoine for asking me to take part in your Foundations of Practice seminar at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. It was so rewarding to hear how other practicing attorneys put their well-being first in their practice.

The advice that I think hit home the most was being present in all that you do. If we aren't present in the moments that should bring us joy - how can we be present and the voice of reason when our clients need a steady hand to guide them through hard things?

Big day for our baby girl.
She graduated her preschool class with the Ray of Sunshine award!
I'm so proud that she brought such a pleasant attitude to win over all her teachers.

Late on sharing this amazing initiative, but as they say better late than never.

Last month, it was incredible to see leaders from labor, environment, and faith pull together to raise awareness about the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of orphaned wells in this part of Appalachia.

(See : Abandoned and Orphan Wells | Department of Environmental Protection | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania https://lnkd.in/g98ZGFDP)

The Center for Coalfield Justice, AFL-CIO, United Mine Workers of America and leaders from the Catholic Faith hosted a panel on how their unlikely partnerships are bringing about solutions to this issue.

A new apprenticeship program to train workers on capping wells which will bring new jobs to this part of the state. The discussion focussed on grant funding initiatives to create these jobs to bring about environmental solutions.

However, I wondered how private land owners could be brought into this initiative? My family owns a farm not far from where this event took place and I couldn't help wondering how many orphaned wells may sit on our property that we don't know about? Could state and local governments create financial incentives for private landowners to be part of this initiative, too?

By the way -- thanks for the invite from Gavyn -- and let me know how I can be a resource to you in the future!
