She says, In honor of national disability employment awareness month, we wanted to talk to you today about some of our personal experiences with employment discrimination in the workplace. Sometimes employment discrimination shows up in places where you wouldn’t expect it to be. One of the first places that it can show up is in a job interview. Many years ago when I was in law school and applying to clerk at law firms I was doing several interviews throughout a long day with many law firms. The last interview that I had for the day was going great. Each interview was supposed to be 30 minutes. It lasted 45. The guy seemed really interested in what I had to say. It was a law firm that practiced the type of law that I thought I wanted to do and so I was so sold on this firm and I was pretty sure leaving that interview that I was going to get a job offer until right before the interview ended. and he looked at me and he said this has been great talking to you but before you go I just have one final question for you.

September is Deaf Awareness Month. A time to celebrate Deaf, hard of hearing, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabeld people, communities, cultures, and languages, while also raising awareness and bringing attention to the rights and protections that help ensure equal access.
Federal disability rights laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, include important protections related to effective communication.
And effective communication isn’t one size fits all. What provides access for one Deaf, hard of hearing, DeafBlind, or DeafDisabled person may not provide access for another. Communication access should be appropriate for the specific person and situation.
