“Anyone who visits D.C. courts sees how busy they are. What you don’t see is how busy they are behind the scenes, trying to stretch a tight budget further.

Since Congress left D.C. Courts’ funding at 2022 levels, criminal cases are up 160%, with President Trump pushing a tough-on-crime agenda.

‘We're at a breaking point, really. Well, we're at a point to where we will not be able to effectively administer justice in the way that the public expects,’ Executive Officer Herbert Rouson, Jr., JD said.”

“The dockets at D.C. Superior Court and the nearby Court of Appeals keep getting longer, but funding for the courthouses has stayed flat for years.” Reporting by WTOP News’ John Domen.

“Now House Republicans are also pushing for a major cut to the court system’s budget, something court officials say would have a detrimental effect on the local justice system.

‘It’s a pretty daunting task to try to administer justice efficiently and effectively for the residents of the District of Columbia with flat budgets, coupled with what we’ve seen in the increase in the workload,’ said Herbert Rouson, the executive officer for the District of Columbia Courts.

Rouson said flat spending, or even cuts, would mean longer waits before cases are heard.”

D.C. court officials say the judiciary is under severe stress, and that proposed funding cuts would have a disastrous effect on justice.

The DC Courts are in crisis | reporting by The Washington Sun:

More than 300 groups and individuals in D.C. have written to the U.S. Senate, urging members to reverse a proposed 13% cut to the current year’s budget — which itself has remained flat for the last four years, even as civil and domestic case filings jumped 33% and criminal cases have more than doubled.

“‘Every arrest, hearing, mediation, and trial depends on a court system with enough people and resources to process cases fairly and on time. Adding judges while cutting the infrastructure that supports them would undermine the progress Congress just made,’ said Misty Thomas Zaleski, executive director of Council forCourt Excellence.

Will Congress listen?”
