We’ll be covering the U.S. Department of Education’s new Back-to-School Dear Colleague Letter during Sligo Law Group’s free September 17 webinar.

The letter does not amend FERPA or PPRA, but it announces important Department positions about when school-administered surveys and mental-health screenings require advance written parental consent. It also identifies several areas of enforcement focus, including parental access to curriculum and student records, annual notices of rights, third-party educational services, and online tools.

During School Supplies: Federal Education Law Updates for the 2026–27 School Year, we’ll explain what the letter says, where its interpretations may require changes in district practices, and what SEAs and LEAs should be reviewing now. We’ll also cover related developments involving student privacy, parental rights, civil rights enforcement, and the changing federal enforcement landscape.

The webinar is free and will place these issues within the broader legal, regulatory, structural, and funding developments affecting education organizations this fall.

Dolly Parton believed every child should grow up with books of their own.

In 1995, inspired by her father, who never learned to read or write, she founded the Imagination Library in her home county in Tennessee. What began there grew into a worldwide program that has mailed more than 300 million free books to children. To the children who watched for those books in the mail each month, she was the Book Lady.

One year ago today, Sligo Law Group officially opened for business.

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of representing and advising states, school districts, colleges and universities, nonprofits, and other organizations working across the education field. Our clients have trusted us with complex, consequential questions, and we are deeply grateful for that trust.

We are also grateful to the many colleagues who have supported us, collaborated with us, shared their insights, made introductions, and welcomed SLG into the broader education community. Your generosity has helped make our first year possible.

Building this firm has given us the opportunity to do the work we care most about: helping education leaders understand their legal obligations, navigate uncertainty, and make sound decisions in service of their students and communities.

One year in, we are proud of what we have built, thankful for everyone who has been part of it, and genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead.

On April 30, Sligo Law Group, the Chicago Lawyers'​ Committee for Civil Rights, and Eimer Stahl LLP filed a motion for a preliminary injunction as part of an ongoing federal lawsuit on behalf of ACT Now Illinois and Metropolitan Family Services.

The suit, filed on December 29, 2025, in the Northern District of Illinois, challenges the U.S. Department of Education's discontinuation of two Full-Service Community Schools grants totaling $18.5 million: funding that supports after-school care, tutoring, STEM programs, food assistance, and health services for nearly 19,000 high-need students and their families across 32 Illinois schools.

The Department discontinued a total of 19 Full-Service Community School grants in late 2025, citing DEI-related language in the original applications. No performance concerns were ever raised.

A temporary agreement has kept ACT Now's programs running, but funding expires June 30. Without a preliminary injunction, ACT Now will be forced to end all operations, terminate staff, and dissolve contracts with partner schools before summer ends.
