Sabita J. Soneji Appointed to Leadership in TriZetto/Cognizant Data Breach MDL

Partner Sabita J. Soneji, Chair of Tycko & Zavareei LLP’s Privacy and Data Breach Practice Group, has been appointed by Judge John Andrew Ross to help lead the TriZetto/Cognizant data breach multidistrict litigation, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri (MDL No. 3185).

The litigation arises from a cyberattack on TriZetto/Cognizant's network that allegedly began in November 2024 and was discovered in October 2025, exposing the personal and medical information of more than 3.4 million individuals. Trizetto is a health technology service used by health care systems as well as their vendors; Cognizant, its parent, is a massive IT service company. Plaintiffs assert claims including negligence, breach of contract, invasion of privacy, breach of fiduciary duty, and violations of state consumer protection laws.

Launch your legal career with Tycko & Zavareei LLP's Public Interest Fellowship. Now in its 15th year, this two-year, post-JD fellowship in Washington, D.C. gives new lawyers hands-on litigation experience across consumer protection, civil rights, whistleblower, wage-and-hour, healthcare, and data privacy matters.

Fellows work as junior associates from day one, receive mentorship from senior litigators, and complete a 12-week placement at a public interest host organization of their choosing. Salary of $95,000 (Year 1) and $109,000 (Year 2), full benefits, and bar expense reimbursement included.

Open to rising 3Ls and recent grads entering clerkships or fellowships. Term begins September 2027.

On Wednesday, Judge Thomas Thrash of the Northern District of Georgia issued a 202-page order largely denying the motions to dismiss of General Motors, Verisk, and LexisNexis in a case about GM’s systematic and surreptitious collection of its customers' driving and personal data and sale of that private data to third parties, including data brokers like Verisk and Lexis. The Court ruling allowed plaintiffs’ federal and state wiretap and Stored Communication Act claims to continue, among many others, and denied Verisk and LexisNexis’ attempt to shield themselves from liability by claiming FCRA preempted these claims against them:

"Additional facts interspersed throughout the amended complaint also show that GM was aware of the complications that arise from siphoning consumer data and engaged in the conduct anyways," Judge Thrash wrote. "On these facts alone, the plaintiffs have met their burden within the amended complaint to survive this argument of the GM defendants' motion to dismiss."

TZ partner Sabita J. Soneji, appointed as track lead in this MDL, responded that she and the other co-leads are grateful for the Court’s careful consideration of these legal issues and are eager to move this case forward.
