Officials found they could clean the building and improve its lighting without harming its character. But the White House favors covering its granite in paint.

Care about history? Watch this short film, Before It's Gone.

For sixty years, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act has given Tribal Nations, communities, local governments, preservation professionals, and the public a voice before federal decisions damage the places that carry our history.

Today, that protection faces unprecedented regulatory, legislative, and executive threats. 1000+ organizations representing 9+ million of Americans have come together to defend it—and to make it stronger for the next generation.

That's right, we're fired up to protect Section 106! Thanks to NPR for covering the fight:

That's right, we're fired up to protect Section 106! Thanks to NPR for covering the fight:

Congress and a federal agency are threatening to weaken the country's historic preservation law, fueling a backlash that critics say is as fiery as the one that led to the law's creation 60 years ago.

Truly excellent reporting by Lindsey McPherson of The Washington Times about the threats to dismantle the National Historic Preservation Act, which celebrates its 60th birthday today.

The federal law designed to protect the nation’s cultural and historical sites turns 60 on Thursday, but it may not survive beyond its diamond jubilee.

In two days, the National Historic Preservation Act will turn 60 years old. But it remains to be seen is what is left of it next month, given the threats posed by the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act.

We need as many of you as possible in the 106 Strong Coalition by THURSDAY. If you have not signed on, please do. If you have, please repost this action alert and recruit others. We've just sent around a second draft letter to Congress opposing the legislation to existing advocates; we'd love to have your voice in the movement.

Reinforcements have arrived. 🎉

Section 106 is under attack on three fronts at once, and Tribal Nations stand to lose critical protections for sacred places and Tribal lands:

🏛️ A Senate bill would gut Section 106, with a vote set for November 9.

📜 The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is set to vote November 10 on a rewrite of its regulations.

🚧 Federal agencies are pushing projects forward while sidestepping review entirely.

That’s why we’re especially glad to welcome Charmayne Barczewski to CHP’s Tribal Nations Practice. 🎉

She joins us at exactly the right moment.

Charmayne spent seven years in federal service, first at the U.S. Department of the Interior and then at the U.S. Department of Justice. She knows from the inside how federal agencies make decisions affecting Indian Country, and how the government defends those decisions in court. Before that, she litigated challenges to natural gas pipeline permits under federal law.

Her background in federal Indian, environmental and administrative law, and in federal litigation, gives our team more capacity to:

⚖️ Hold agencies accountable for compliance with Section 106 and NEPA

🔍 Analyze the Senate bill and the proposed regulations, and build the record against them

🤝 Defend Tribal consultation and Tribal sovereignty as federal agencies try to narrow both

🏔️ Help Tribal Nations and communities protect their sacred places and historic sites

Charmayne put the stakes plainly: “Short-sighted efforts to undermine Section 106 threaten long-term harm to our shared cultural and historic heritage. This is not a partisan issue.”

👋 Welcome to the team, Charmayne. There’s work to do, and we’re glad you’re here.
