I practice in Circuit Court from time to time, although it doesn't look quite like this anymore.

This is the old Circuit Court in the courthouse, and I'm glad they kept it. There's just something cool about seeing where lawyers stood and made their arguments all those years ago. The doors, the woodwork, the old courtroom. There's a lot of Warsaw history in that room.

Most of my job actually happens outside of a courtroom. Phone calls, meetings, going through records, dealing with insurance companies and trying to get things worked out fairly for my clients. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn't. And when it doesn't, that's what court is there for.

I spend a lot of time sitting across from people, listening and taking notes. Sometimes saying less and listening more is a pretty good rule.

That’s especially true when the other driver’s insurance company calls after an accident. Most of us were raised to answer questions and be helpful, so it feels natural to just start talking. But you don’t have to give them a recorded statement just because they ask.

And if you do talk to them, don’t guess. “I don’t know” and “I don’t remember” are perfectly good answers when they’re true. Sometimes the smartest answer is the shortest one.

It's funny how two people can see the exact same accident and remember it differently. I run into this more than you'd think. Somebody is positive the light was green, someone else remembers it being yellow, and a witness saw something neither person in the accident even noticed.

I don't think anybody is necessarily lying. Things happen fast and our memories aren't quite as reliable as we'd like to think they are. It's why I tell people to take pictures if they can, and if somebody stopped and saw what happened, get their name and number. You may remember everything perfectly today. A couple weeks from now, maybe not so much.

I've always liked living in a small town. You get to know people. You see the same faces at the diner, the grocery store, church, or a ball game. You ask how someone's family is doing, and you actually want to hear the answer.

I see that same spirit after accidents. Someone stops to make sure everyone is okay. A witness sticks around when they could've left. Neighbors offer rides and friends bring meals. My job gives me a front-row seat to some really hard days, but it also reminds me how often people show up for each other. That's one of the things I love most about this community.
