There are two parts of the CARES Act that was signed on Friday by the President that applies to small business owners and 1099 contractors - unemployment and the Paycheck Protection Program.
Small business owners and 1099 contractors can now apply for unemployment.
In Pennsylvania, there will be a special process and you should check out the state's website.
The Paycheck Protection Program is the loan that turns into a grant IF you follow the rules and IF you apply for loan forgiveness. The decision about whether to apply for it will be different for every business and based on your unique circumstances. When seeking advice, please be aware of it and make sure that the banker, SBA or lawyer understands everything about you and your business. The eligibility for this program is fairly straight forward but the loan forgiveness piece is a lot more complex and you are going to want to use it to your advantage to keep your business afloat during these challenging times.
