That’s how long it took a jury to return a NOT GUILTY verdict in our DUI trial today.

I had the privilege of trying this case alongside my partner, Mark Andrews. Mark is not only one of my best friends, he’s one of my favorite people to stand beside in a courtroom. Jury trials are serious business but trying a case with someone you trust, respect, and genuinely enjoy working with makes the long hours preparing for them a lot more enjoyable.

Our client trusted us to fight. We did.

The jury deliberated for 27 minutes.

NOT GUILTY.

Every case is different. Every case depends on its own unique facts and circumstances, and past results never guarantee a future outcome.

And in the eternal words of Ice Cube…

“Today was a good day.”

Labor Day means more to me than the unofficial end of summer.

I grew up blue collar. My dad worked in a foundry, and in college I worked third shift in a factory every summer to help pay for school. After working all night, I’d go straight to football workouts and conditioning then sleep and repeat.

Today I wear a suit, but I haven’t forgotten where I came from or the people who taught me what hard work looks like.

This Labor Day, I’m grateful for everyone working in factories, construction, shipyards, warehouses, hospitals, restaurants, public safety, and every other job that keeps this country moving.

You’ve earned the long weekend.

And from your DUI lawyer: Courts may be closed Monday, but consequences aren’t. Have fun, make a plan, and get home safely.
