Michael Hoffman was published in the June 2020 Issue of NJ Lawyer Magazine. In a scholarly article, written even before the COVID-19 crisis, Mike posed the question, thinking 5-10 years ahead, with significant technological changes on the horizon, are the municipal courts, and their revenue for municipalities, sustainable? A lot of work and thought and compromise went into a bill that is going to fail today. In doing so, New Jersey is worse and behind the wave. I am disappointed.

The push for New Jersey ma*****na legalization comes to a head today, with legal w**d votes scheduled. But it's still not clear whether it will pass.

New Jersey’s Attorney General issued a stay on prosecutions of ma*****na related cases until September 4. His letter states that he will be sending out amended guidelines for prosecutorial discretion in ma*****na cases. Right now, prosecutors must try or dismiss those cases. This sounds like the first step in the direction of decriminalization and also sounds like - - my committee has some work to do.

The Hoffman Centers Mission Statement (or, as Colleen called it, the longest run-on sentence EVER) -- As a whole, The Hoffman Centers will endeavor to represent clients ethically, to the best of my ability, to operate a professional law practice with the utmost respect for the law and policies of the United States, to endeavor, when policies are non-existent, to direct governmental entities to make reasonable and prudent choices with regard to those policies, when policies exist but are antiquated or wrong, to direct governmental entities to make reasonable and prudent changes in those policies, and when neither of the above exist, but hired by a client with an interest, to direct governmental entities to make reasonable and prudent changes or policies that will most benefit our client, and to engage in bringing to consideration ideas which might prove enterprising and/or innovative, and which might serve to improve lives, or where hired by a client, to advise them in the most effective way to bring their idea, enterprise, and/or innovation to the lives which it would serve to improve.

Well, Today is the day. The Hoffman Centers for Law, Policy and Innovation represent everything I have to offer as a solo-practitioner. The Law Center is the legal practice that I am beginning. While I have some expertise in Municipal Court, Debt Collection and Property Tax Appeal law, I will not be limiting myself to those areas. I will be a general practitioner and give you an honest opinion of whether or not I can assist you. The Policy Center is the way I will help things get better. I will offer my opinions on how to change law and policy, and I will offer my knowledge, experience and critical analysis to the effective advocacy of policies. Finally, The Innovation Center will provide an opportunity for organic and extrinsic business incubation, to allow for the ability to take the seed of an idea and grow it into a fruitful business.
If you are a colleague, I look forward to working with you, and helping you in any way I possibly can. If you are a current or former client, I look forward to the opportunity to offer you revitalized and restructured relationship and representation, helping you achieve your goals. If you think you might want to be a client, or think there is something that I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to call me and ask me.
As with anything new, this is a time of great anticipation, anxiety, excitement and hope. I thank you all for your support up to this point.
