The rental scammers are always lurking! They are looking to take advantage of people who are desperate to find a property. I get calls, texts, and emails all the time from prospective tenants who are running out of time because the property is being sold and their lease is up ! Their landlord is capitalizing on the still very active sellers’ market. You can tell they are full of anxiety since some, unfortunately, are about to be homeless. They have no place to go. When people are most vulnerable the scammers jump into action. I can’t stress this enough: if it sounds too good to be true, it’s more than likely a scam! If the ”landlord” is not requesting a credit check/application then it’s probably a scam. Think about it…if you were about to rent your property, wouldn’t you want some form of proof that the prospective tenant has the ability to pay the rent? Employment history, references, etc!! If the “landlord” is asking you to wire/Venmo, cash app money upfront and you haven’t even seen the property, that’s probably a scam. If the “landlord” doesn’t care at all if you have multiple pets, I would seriously question the legitimacy of the deal. Lastly, many times you will need to complete an application/some type of credit screening. Instead of paying multiple times because you have to apply to more than one rental, download your completed screening and save it because sometimes the report can be used for other applications. This will save you $30-50 typically. For me, $35 is a Wawa run for food with my sons so I’d rather spend that money on other necessities. Don’t get scammed!
