Sometimes disputes develop with those who are in our lives each day and with whom we want to preserve relationships. Regardless of whether the matter involves a divorce, an employment matter or a business relationship, controversy can be very stressful and disruptive. In these cases, consider trying mediation first before turning to court. Mediation offers an opportunity to resolve those disputes while preserving relationships. Mediation offers a number of advantages to filing a lawsuit. It is cheaper, quicker, confidential, flexible, informal and empowering. Mediation sessions can occur at a time and in a location convenient to you. There are no rules of evidence, court procedure, or sworn testimony. Lawyers are not required to be involved. The parties meet with a trained neutral mediator in an informal setting to talk about what happened and explore possible solutions. These solutions may be different from the options available in court. Best of all, those who mediate disputes report being happier with the outcome than those who litigate. Mediation is appropriate for parties who are separating or divorcing and would like to resolve support, parenting arrangements, and property settlements for review by their attorneys. If you think mediation is something you would like to try, contact Pat Anderson, a Virginia Supreme Court certified mediator at (571) 293-6190 or (202) 352-8978 or [email protected] to schedule a free orientation to mediation session.
