Gut Fermentation Syndrome

The intestinal tract is approximately a 25-foot long fermentation tube that is capable of generating very large amounts of ethanol/alcohol. Candida, well-known for its ability to generate ethanol at quantities that raise Blood Alcohol Concentration levels beyond legal limits, is a frequent cause of Gut Fermentation Syndrome/Auto-Brewery Syndrome.

New research shows that candida isn’t the only cause of Gut Fermentation Syndrome. A recent study shows that someone with a Klebsiella bacteria strain is capable of creating an “ultra-high blood alcohol level” after consuming an alcohol-free, high carbohydrate diet. “Having these bacteria in your gut means your body is exposed to alcohol constantly,” states co-author of the study, Di Liu from the Chinese PLA Hospital in Beijing.

While candida infection may seem like an unlikely cause of alcohol production and drunk driving, candida is genetically wired to produce alcohol. Candida contains no less than 5 genes that ferment alcohol from sugars – ADH/orf19.3997, ADH2/orf19.5113, ADH3/orf19.4505, ADH5/orf19.2608; ADH/orf19.4504.

This production of alcohol has been shown to occur in vitro and in the infected host. Blood alcohol levels from candida have been reported to easily exceed .08%.

Imagine that you haven’t been feeling like yourself for a while. You wake up every morning feeling a little sick and having a hangover. You’ve put on weight and are constantly dealing with excessive gas and bloating, and occasional abdominal pain. You notice that sugar really makes all of your symptoms worse, but you find yourself craving sweets. One day while driving back to work after a lunch with pasta, bread, dessert, and a soda, you pass out while waiting for a red light in your car. You awaken to police officers pounding on your window with a heavy metal flashlight. In a dazed state, you open the car door. Suddenly, you find yourself having failed an alcohol breath test and you’re arrested for drunken driving, but you haven’t had anything to drink. Your whole life has just changed and you don’t know why.
