The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the most impressive birds found in North America. With its large body, bold black-and-white markings, and bright red crest, it is easy to recognize even from a distance. Its dramatic appearance often makes people stop and look twice when it lands on the trunk of a tall tree.

This woodpecker is known for its powerful bill and energetic pecking. It chips deep, rectangular holes into dead or decaying wood while searching for carpenter ants, beetle larvae, and other insects. The fresh holes can look surprisingly large, almost as if someone used a tool on the tree.

Pileated Woodpeckers usually live in mature forests, wooded neighborhoods, and places with plenty of old trees. They need large standing trunks, fallen logs, and snags where insects hide and nesting cavities can be made. Because of this, seeing one can be a lovely sign that a natural area still has healthy, established trees.

Their call is loud, wild, and unforgettable, often echoing through the woods before the bird itself is visible. You may also hear the strong drumming sound of its bill striking a hollow trunk. That sound is used not only for feeding but also for communication and marking territory.

Although the Pileated Woodpecker looks fierce and powerful, it plays an important role in the forest. The nesting holes it creates are later used by small owls, ducks, bats, squirrels, and other wildlife. Every time this striking bird works on a tree, it helps create shelter and opportunity for many other forest animals.

"1935 When seventeen-year-old Wilfred Daigle got accepted to the CCC camp up in Kisatchie, the whole family celebrated for exactly one evening, until his father, Onezime Daigle, did the arithmetic and realized the train fare to the camp was four dollars they did not have. Wilfred offered to walk, which made his mother, Edmée Daigle, cry, so the family made a different plan: for three weeks every frog they gigged went into the fare fund, and Wilfred gigged harder than any of them, as if each frog were a mile of track. His little sister, Aveline Daigle, who was nine, insisted on gigging too, and became the family's lucky charm, spotting frog eyes nobody else could see. On the last Friday before he had to leave, the buyer counted out their catch and the fund held four dollars and sixty cents, and Edmée spent the extra sixty cents on a fried pie and a new handkerchief for her son's pocket. At the depot in Plaquemine the whole family stood waving until the train was gone, and Wilfred wrote home every week from the camp, sending money orders that eventually paid for Aveline's schoolbooks. He always said the CCC gave him a trade, but the bayou gave him the ticket there, one frog at a time.
