Thousands sign petition demanding county keep promise for new Pet Resource Center

Animal advocates say they're not against the stadium — but they worry funding for the Pet Resource Center could be pushed aside.

"Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers got a new stadium in 1998, the Rays got a new stadium in basically 2028, and this [PRC] was built in 1988," said Brian Bokor, who signed the petition and shared it with his 35,000 Facebook followers. "Two sports stadiums, large arenas got built, and we're still sitting in a 40-year-old facility."

Bokor told Tampa Bay 28 News that the petition isn't about choosing between baseball and animals.

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners has a budget meeting scheduled for next Thursday, according to Bokor. Petition organizers say they plan to attend and encourage others to show up as well.

"When people show up, they do listen," Bokor told Tampa Bay 28 News. "The meeting on the 24th is the meeting that determines what stays in the CIT budget for fiscal year '28. So that's kind of the one where the rubber meets the road, and we want to make sure that that money stays."

🦋 Sometimes the smallest things become the biggest moments.

I was clearing yard debris a couple days back and noticed a Monarch caterpillar on the ground...I moved it to a Milkweed plant having no idea how close it was to the chrysalis stage...then the next day...this!

With colder temps coming, I moved the chrysalis to a protected spot on our patio...In a few days, this tiny green case should open...

Nature is pretty incredible when you slow down long enough to notice it. Enjoy your weekend!

Apparently, I didn’t take enough abuse last week, so naturally, I decided to start this week by reporting on subdivisions again.

🏘️ 𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝟏𝟕𝟐-𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐒𝐊𝐘𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘

Mattamy Homes is moving forward with Skyhawk, a new 172-home community along Balm Boyette Road south of Rhodine Road in Riverview.

Large portions of the 102-acre property have already been cleared, and Hillsborough County released the project’s civil plans for construction on Aug. 14.

Plans show 94 lots measuring approximately 50 by 120 feet and 78 lots measuring approximately 60 by 120 feet.

Community amenities are planned to include a swimming pool, playground, 2,912-square-foot amenity building, sport court and dog park.

Mattamy is also preparing three showcase homes, including an on-site sales center. The approved plans include improvements along Balm Boyette Road.

The plans do not identify home prices or an opening date.

Bokors Corner will continue following the project as construction moves forward.

FWIW - I want the Rays to stay and see the stadium built.

My concern isn’t the stadium. It’s how we’re paying for it, what we’re giving up to build it and whether Hillsborough County taxpayers are protected.

For months, the mixed-use development surrounding the ballpark has been a major part of the sales pitch. We weren’t just getting a stadium. We were getting 100+ acres of hotels, apartments, offices, restaurants, retail and entertainment that would create jobs, generate tax revenue and help justify the public investment.

But none of that development is guaranteed under the final deal.

There are no minimum requirements for hotels, apartments, office or retail space. No firm construction schedule. Not even a requirement that the development be completed in phases.

Earlier negotiations included development minimums and financial penalties if certain milestones were not met. Those requirements are gone. They have been replaced by an incentive system tied to the taxable value created within the district...that may encourage development, but it does not require it.

Hillsborough could commit hundreds of millions of public dollars toward the ballpark without any guarantee that the private development being used to justify that investment ever gets built.

The Rays may intend to build everything shown in the renderings. I hope they do...but intentions and renderings are not guarantees.

If the surrounding development is supposed to make this deal worthwhile, why isn’t any minimum amount of it required in writing?

Tampa City Council votes Thursday. Hillsborough BOCC votes 9 a.m. Friday at County Center.

Residents may register online beginning 9 a.m. Wednesday, when the 48-hour registration window opens. Online registration is open until 9 a.m. Friday. In-person registration available at County Center from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Friday.

We have three updates from the new Publix-anchored Wolf Creek Commons in Ruskin.

Mathnasium is approximately two weeks away from opening its 1,500-square-foot tutoring center at 3062 19th Avenue NE. A representative said the center is targeting an opening in early September.

Mathnasium’s illuminated wall-sign plans were approved on May 6 and its interior-buildout plans on August 19.

Next door, Pizza World is coming to a 1,440-square-foot storefront at 3066 19th Avenue NE.

Hillsborough County approved its wall-sign permit on August 11, while the company’s official website continues to list the Ruskin restaurant as “Coming Soon.” No opening date has been announced.

The third update may eventually become the biggest story.

The latest Wolf Creek Commons lease plan shows two previously planned outparcels combined into 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝟏.𝟗𝟏-𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞. No tenant or proposed project has been identified, and the parcel remains listed as available.

For now, we know the developer has created a substantially larger site—but we don’t know what may eventually be built there.
