⚡ NIPSCO POWER RESTORATION UPDATE — 9 P.M. FRIDAY, AUG. 14 ⚡

NIPSCO continues what it describes as one of the largest outage restoration efforts in company history following three consecutive severe weather events that caused historic damage across its electric system.

CURRENT OUTAGE NUMBERS

⚡ 172,000 customers remain without power
✅ 145,000 customers have been restored since the event began

At the height of the storms, outages peaked at approximately 317,000 customers — more than 60% of NIPSCO’s electric customers.

CURRENT RESTORATION ESTIMATES

NIPSCO’s system-wide estimated restoration timeline remains:

• Approximately 90% restored by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18

• Approximately 100% restored by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21

• Community-specific restoration estimates are expected Sunday evening, Aug. 16

These are system-wide estimates, meaning individual neighborhoods and customers could be restored earlier or later depending on the extent of damage in their area.

EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE

As assessments continue, crews are getting a clearer picture of just how extensive the destruction is.

So far, NIPSCO crews have identified:

⚠️ 180 damaged transmission poles

⚠️ 201 damaged distribution poles

In addition, 199 vegetation-management crews are working to remove trees and debris so electric crews can safely reach damaged infrastructure and make repairs.

Thousands of NIPSCO employees, contractors and mutual-aid personnel continue working around the clock. The restoration effort also includes employees from sister Columbia Gas companies and support from the Indiana National Guard.

MORE STORMS COULD IMPACT RESTORATION

Additional thunderstorms and severe weather remain possible across northern Indiana over the next several days.

NIPSCO warns that additional storms could cause new outages, further infrastructure damage and delays to restoration work already underway.

With another round of potentially heavy rainfall expected tonight, residents should continue preparing for the possibility of an extended outage.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT & SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Customers who depend on electrically powered medical or life-support equipment should follow their emergency preparedness plans and use backup power or make alternative arrangements when necessary.

The numbers show significant progress — 145,000 customers restored — but this remains an enormous, region-wide rebuilding effort following historic storm damage. Crews still have a tremendous amount of work ahead as Northwest Indiana moves through the recovery process.

PORTER COUNTY DISASTER DECLARATION

Due to the significant impacts from Tuesday’s severe storm, Porter County is declaring a disaster for the county.

This declaration recognizes the widespread damage and impacts experienced across Porter County and allows emergency management and local officials to coordinate resources, document damage, and pursue additional assistance as appropriate.

Residents and businesses who experienced storm-related damage are encouraged to report that damage to 211 as indicated on our post shared earlier today.

Porter County Emergency Management will continue working with our local, state, and federal partners as we assess the full extent of the damage and determine what additional assistance may be available.

We appreciate the hard work of our first responders, public safety agencies, public works crews, utility companies, volunteers, and everyone working to help our communities recover.
