New for 2026 (Effective Jan 1, 2026):

Dexter's Law (HB 255): Establishes a searchable state database of animal cruelty convictions, accessible to adoption agencies and the public, to prevent abusers from adopting pets, impacting cases where pets are involved in domestic situations.

Animal Insurance (HB 655): Updates regulations for pet insurance, defining it as property insurance and requiring clearer agent disclosures.
Recent Major Changes (Already in Effect/Impactful):

Greyson's Law: Makes it easier for parents to restrict time with the other parent if domestic violence is a concern, lowering the burden of proof.
Alimony: Laws now consider adultery and its economic impact when calculating alimony payments.

Child Custody (Time-Sharing): There's a strong, rebuttable presumption for equal time-sharing (50/50) for children, requiring courts to find good cause to deviate.

UCCJEA Updates: Changes to the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act help determine which state has jurisdiction over child custody matters.
