If you inherit money during your marriage, don’t assume that means it will always remain separate.

What happens to those funds after you receive them matters.

If you put an inheritance into a joint account, use it to purchase property with your spouse, or mix it with marital funds, it can become much more difficult to establish what was separate and what was marital.

This is one of those issues I encourage clients to think about before there is a problem.

If you want to preserve the separate nature of an inheritance, you have to be intentional about how you handle it.
