A juvenile charge should never be treated as a minor matter. While the juvenile justice system differs from adult criminal court, the outcome can still affect a young person’s education, family life, record, and future opportunities.
At Gonzalez & Associates, we believe families in Union City, Hudson County, and throughout New Jersey should understand their child’s rights from the beginning. For example:
🔹 Contact with law enforcement does not always mean a case will proceed to court. Depending on the circumstances, an officer may issue a warning, release the minor to a parent or guardian, or make a referral to juvenile court.
🔹 When a child is taken into custody, law enforcement generally must make reasonable efforts to notify a parent or guardian. A minor may also be permitted to contact a parent, guardian, or attorney—but families should remember that phone calls can be recorded.
Every juvenile matter involves unique facts, and New Jersey law can significantly affect what happens next. Prompt legal guidance can help protect a child’s rights and give families clarity during a difficult time.
