September is National Kinship Care Month, recognizing grandparents and other relatives who step in to care for children when parents cannot.

These arrangements often begin informally, with family simply doing what needs to be done. Over time, questions can arise about school, medical care, decision-making and who actually has legal authority for the child.

For relatives raising a child, understanding the difference between providing day-to-day care and having legal authority can be important.

A child should not have to remember exchange times, deliver payment requests, explain a schedule change, or carry complaints from one home to the other.

Use a shared calendar. Send school and activity updates directly to the other parent. Keep messages brief, factual, and focused on the child. Show up to games, performances, and school events without turning them into a conflict. Following the order is the legal baseline. Protecting the child's peace is the co-parenting goal.

When alcohol or substance use creates a documented child-safety concern, a Texas court may use targeted protections rather than relying on a promise alone. Depending on the evidence, an order may include random drug testing, EtG alcohol testing, remote breath testing, continuous alcohol monitoring, abstinence before or during possession, treatment, or supervised visits.

A workable order should be specific about when testing occurs, who pays, who receives the results, and what happens after a positive, missed, or altered test. The purpose is protecting the child's safety, not punishing a parent for seeking help.
