If not, that account could end up going through probate when you pass, meaning your loved ones may have to wait months (and spend money on court fees) just to access the funds.

The fix is simple: ask your bank to add a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary to your account. It's free, takes just a few minutes, and means the money goes directly to your chosen person, no court, no delays.

In California, any account held in your name alone with no beneficiary designation is generally subject to probate. Joint accounts with right of survivorship are a different story.
