I believe that connecting with your clients is integral to being an effective advocate.
In 2019, one of the first injury cases I ever worked on my own, from start to finish, was Ronda Davis's. She was suffering migraine headings, neck pain, and back pain after being rear-ended at the train tracks on S. 11th.
Over the course of my representation of her, I learned that Ronda is a talented piano teacher, and in fact she plays multiple instruments. I've played guitar since I was about ten years old, and so I know personally how therapeutic music can be, and I connected with her about how frustrating it must have been for her not to be able to play or teach piano.
While I negotiated with the defense lawyer, I emphasized to him that a jury would easily connect with Ronda too. Her love for music and teaching is clear to see, and her frustration was easy to sympathize with.
I obtained her a very favorable settlement without having to go to trial. But that's not the end of the story!
Last year, Ronda invited me to play guitar accompanying the Abilene Homeschool Choir at their Spring concert. I have to admit, I was nervous! My first gig since high school...
But our rehearsals paid off, and the concert was a success! In fact, I think (hope!) I earned myself a permanent spot with the choir. Since then, I've played at last year's Christmas concert and this year's Spring concert. It's a fun and fulfilling way to give back to the people and community that have given me so much.
