“Notably, those court collections for entities not related to the judicial branch have grown to 52 designated funds, up from 34 in fiscal year 2007. In recent years, lawmakers additionally have imposed two administrative charges that together tag defendants with an extra 25% of all fees collected by the courts for executive branch purposes.

Oklahoma’s dependence on court collections to underwrite not just the judicial system but state and local executive branch agencies is apparent in documents. Executive branch functions implement and carry out government operations and are separate from the courts, which adjudicate matters of law.”

I see the fallout of this system on lower income individuals every single day. The added court costs, DA supervision fees (some counties even have Community Service Supervision fees on top of the already high DA fees paid to the same lady in the same office), fines, and any other costly requirements placed on these individuals just to remain out of jail or prison and with their children and families is unmanaged to put it politely!! Please stop funding our state off these already struggling families!! Thank you Tulsa World for articles like these shedding light on this tragedy!

Fines, fees and court costs keep rising. State government is using the money to pay more of its bills.

Got to my office and realized we were out of coffee. Went down to the 8th floor cafeteria , but they were also out. Fortunately, the very kind lady that runs the snack shop offered some of her own instant coffee that she kept on hand. It reminds me of backpacking through Peru and savoring every drop of instant coffee I could possibly locate. On this cold, windy (possibly snowy) day, this little sentiment cheered me right up. Happy Tuesday from Sinclair Law ☕️ ❄️

In her dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg pointed out exactly what’s at stake for North Dakota — 70,000 residents of the state lack an ID that qualifies under the new rules. That’s nearly 20 percent of the typical turnout for a midterm election. The ruling, Ginsburg said, “may lead to voters finding out at the polling place that they cannot vote because their formerly valid ID is now insufficient.”

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court chose to stand by and allow the war against voting to continue. Just a little less than a month before midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, the court decided not to block North Dakota’s restrictive voter ID law, which will make it harder for peop...

“I do this work because I understand the struggles that every incarcerated offender goes through, as well as the family that must endure it as well. I believe the mass incarceration problem in Oklahoma can be decreased with the help of nonprofits like the American Indian Criminal Justice Navigation Council. It’s going to take participation from all sectors — from federal, state, tribal, county, and individual advocacy — to help decrease the issue Oklahoma is currently facing. I believe my state of Oklahoma has the ability to combat the currently high numbers of incarcerated American Indians. If not, the generational cycle will continue for other young children who face the same challenges I did. Without the help of my family, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Alpha Pi Omega, Southern Plains Tribal Health Board, American Indian Criminal Justice Navigation Council, and Center for Native American Youth, I wouldn’t be able to continue my advocacy work to help create a better place for those who will come after me.”
