Guy Fortney, Katie Arnold, and Thomas Reese were pleased to serve as judges for The University of Tulsa College of Law Board of Advocates’ 1L Contract Negotiation Competition.

The competition gives first-year law students an opportunity to develop practical negotiation, advocacy, and problem-solving skills early in their legal education. We enjoyed meeting the students, watching them put those skills into practice, and supporting a program that provides meaningful hands-on experience outside the classroom.

Last week, Brewster & De Angelis attorney Katie Arnold returned to her alma mater, the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, for a Constitution Day panel alongside Norman Wohlgemuth attorney and fellow alumna Sarah McManes and managing partner, Joel Wohlgemuth.

The conversation centered on Chatrie v. United States, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court this June. While investigating a 2019 credit union robbery, police used a geofence warrant to obtain Google location data for every phone within 150 meters of the scene during the hour surrounding the robbery. The Court held that accessing that data is a Fourth Amendment search: we have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the record of where our phones, and therefore we, have been.

The panel sparked conversation about checks and balances, the role the courts play when technology advances beyond the law, and what each of us can do to effectuate change in our own lives and communities.

It was a good week to be a Tulsa fan! Congratulations to the Golden Hurricane football team on its win over OSU on Saturday. 🏈🏆

Days before kickoff, our team at Brewster & De Angelis, alongside Norman Wohlgemuth, secured an injunction against the NCAA on behalf of six University of Tulsa student-athletes, allowing them to compete this school year.

When the NCAA revised its eligibility model this summer, it arbitrarily carved out student-athletes who entered in the fall of 2022. For four years, these athletes competed against older peers granted five years of eligibility under COVID-19 or "Pavia" waivers. The new rule automatically gives every class entering after them five years.

In March 2023, Ashlen Franklin survived a catastrophic electrocution while investigating a faulted underground utility line, suffering severe burns and the loss of her right arm below the elbow.

Her story is one of remarkable strength, and it has been a privilege for the entire Brewster & De Angelis team to advocate for her and stand by her side.

Richard Glossip released on bond.

Nine ex*****on dates. Three last meals. And yesterday, for the first time in nearly 29 years, Richard Glossip is free on bond following the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of his conviction after finding prosecutorial misconduct and perjury by the State’s central witness. See Glossip v. Oklahoma, 604 U.S. 226 (2025).

“It’s overwhelming and amazing at the same time,” Glossip said as he walked out the Oklahoma County Jail with his wife and attorneys.

Yesterday, a federal jury in North Carolina found Uber liable for the sexual assault of a then-23-year-old woman, marking Uber's second consecutive loss in the ongoing bellwether trials. Our associate attorney Katie Arnold attended the trial in person last week, and here is what stood out to her:

"This was supposed to be one of Uber's strongest cases, yet the jury rejected their predictable defense, which relentlessly attacked the plaintiff's credibility. The plaintiff presented trauma-informed evidence through Dr. Veronique Valliere, dismantling misconceptions about how survivors of sexual assault behave and why their experiences are often misunderstood. That testimony reframed the narrative and helped the jury evaluate credibility through the lens of trauma, not stigma."

Thomas brings nearly a decade of criminal defense experience in state and federal court, most recently as an Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Oklahoma. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law and the National Criminal Defense College's Daryl Dantzler Trial Practice Institute, he is a distinguished trial advocate whose work has produced favorable outcomes in many high-stakes cases before judges and juries.
