When a Police Surveillance System Becomes a Stalker’s Tool

The Washington Post’s reporting on the misuse of Flock cameras should alarm everyone.

These systems can track where you go, when you leave home, whom you visit, and the patterns of your daily life. In the wrong hands, that information becomes a weapon. A former partner with access to police technology can know where you are before you ever realize you are being watched.

This is not merely an internal policy violation. It is an abuse of power and a profound betrayal of public trust.

Government surveillance used for personal revenge strikes at the heart of the Fourth Amendment. No one should have to fear that an officer can turn a taxpayer-funded surveillance network into a private stalking system.

Technology this intrusive demands strict access controls, independent oversight, permanent audit trails, immediate consequences for misuse, and criminal prosecution when warranted.

A badge cannot become a license to spy. And “trust us” is not a safeguard.

Watch the bodycam for yourself.

Tony Romo is polite. He’s cooperative. He answers questions. Yet the situation quickly escalates without the officer clearly explaining why he has to get out of the vehicle or immediately perform field sobriety tests.

Then Tony does something many people would do—he asks to call his lawyer and tries to understand what’s happening. That’s not the same as refusing to cooperate. But instead of answering his questions, the officer treats it as a refusal and moves straight toward an arrest.

Here’s where it gets even more concerning.

The field sobriety tests weren’t given before the arrest. They were given after Tony was handcuffed. NHTSA’s own training says these tests are meant to help an officer decide whether there’s probable cause to arrest, not to justify an arrest that had already been made.

That raises an important question: Was the investigation following the rules, or was the evidence being gathered to support a decision that had already been made?

When the process breaks down, the entire case can begin to crack. Good DUI cases are often won not because of excuses, but because the evidence doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

This one appears to have some very real cracks.

A major part of The American Legion’s mission is teaching America’s youth about service to country, civic responsibility, and our system of government. Each year, 100 rising high school seniors from across the nation come together in Washington, D.C., for a week-long, immersive, hands-on government experience.
