If you've never been through one, the word alone can feel intimidating. Here's what it actually means.

A deposition is sworn testimony from a witness, written down and/or recorded on video. It's not a casual chat. It's a formal Q&A with an attorney, and even though it usually happens in a law office instead of a courtroom, you're still under oath. That oath carries the exact same weight as testifying in front of a judge and jury.

If you're ever called to give one, remember these 4 rules:

Property damage claims don't stop at your bumper. Car seats, phones, laptops, even your favorite water bottle, if it was in the car and it's damaged, it can potentially be part of your claim.

Here's what to do before you clean anything out:
✓ Photograph the damaged item before you toss it
✓ Save the model number and description
✓ Tell your adjuster or attorney about it so it gets included

Whether it's actually recoverable depends on the coverage available, but if nobody knows about it, there's nothing to evaluate. Don't let an adjuster shortchange your claim because you didn't know to speak up.

Your car isn’t the only thing that can be damaged in a crash.

That cracked phone. Your child’s car seat. The laptop you had with you. Your glasses. Work materials or other personal belongings.

Depending on the circumstances and available coverage, damaged personal property may be part of your property damage claim.
