A lot of what you see from me here is about working with survivors: Marsy's Law, victims' rights, and standing beside people the system too often overlooks. That work is the heart of my practice, and it always will be.

But it isn't all I do.

I'm at a point in my career where I get to be selective about the clients and matters I take on, and that's a gift I don't take lightly. Beyond representation of victims and survivors, my practice also includes:

• Municipal law, including serving as a city attorney
• Civil litigation, including business, construction, and real estate disputes
• Work with longtime clients, law school classmates, and referrals from other attorneys I trust

Some matters come to me through relationships I value. Some come because they raise a legal question I can't stop thinking about. And honestly? Some of that work is what keeps my doors open, so I can say yes to survivors who might not otherwise have anyone in their corner.

Thank you to Angel Ford and Public Radio Tulsa for having me on to talk about my memoir, My Beauty from Ashes: Enduring the Fire, Becoming the Light, which releases October 15.

My work as an attorney is shaped by my own experience as a survivor. Every day, I see how much of this problem is systemic and how much still needs to change. No one person can fix all of it. But I believe the voices of survivors need to be heard most, and this book is one way my way of adding mine.

It took me six years to write. My hope is that it helps even one survivor feel less alone.

Stories about the alleged gang r**e at Cornell University have the country talking about campus sexual assault. It’s at this moment in time that a University of Tulsa graduate is releasing a memoir about her own r**e.

My story and my work have never been separate, though I tried (unsuccessfully) to keep them that way for far too long. What I lived through shapes how I listen, how I advocate, and why I fight for survivors' rights.

When I was 19-20, I went looking for a book that could help me make sense of what had happened to me. I couldn't find one. So nearly 30 years later, I wrote it.

This book is for every survivor who has wondered if healing is possible, and for everyone who walks alongside them. You are not alone, and your story isn't over.

Survivors deserve to be heard, in the courtroom and beyond. That belief drives how I practice law.

The crime is the first wound. Too often, it isn't the last.

The Cornell case, a lawsuit alleging a 2024 fraternity-house sexual assault, no criminal charges at the time, and an investigation only now being reopened, has put a spotlight on something survivors know all too well.

After a sexual assault, a survivor turns to the systems that are supposed to help: law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, hospitals, schools. Too often, those encounters become a "second wound” and the “help” is less than helpful. Being doubted. Being dismissed. Being left uninformed. Being retraumatized by the very process meant to deliver justice. For many survivors, that betrayal cuts deeper than the crime itself.

In Oklahoma, Marsy's Law guarantees crime victims constitutional rights, including the right to be treated with fairness and respect for their safety, dignity, and privacy, to be notified, to be present, to be heard, and to confer with the prosecutor. But rights only matter if someone asserts them. Rights only matter if someone enforces them.

That's why I do this work. When I represent a survivor, I try to account for every system she's had to face, not just the case in front of us. I won't always get it perfect. But I will always keep striving to do better.

As a survivor of sexual violence and as an attorney who now represents fellow survivors, the last several days, since the news broke about Cornell, have been a lot.

The anger, grief, injustice, and overwhelm have been palpable. I’ve been doing my absolute best to take care of my clients as well as myself.

This afternoon, I had what I thought was a planning session for a Victims’ Rights Panel CLE I’ll be participating in next month for the Oklahoma Access to Justice Foundation Summit. And it was. But it was so much more than that.

Jill Durbin Keuth (who I’m going to need to add to speed dial) started us off with time to close our eyes, breathe, visualize, and ground ourselves. Not exactly how a bunch of attorneys typically start a meeting.

But it was EXACTLY what I needed. I think it was what we all needed. Because if we are going to fight this fight, we are going to need more moments like that.
