Clients are often surprised when I tell them that a great estate plan does not revolve around a will.

In many cases, assets pass through beneficiary designations, joint ownership, or a trust, often without ever going through probate court. But that doesn't make a will unnecessary.

Think of a will as the safety net of your estate plan.

A will tells the probate court who should receive property that doesn't otherwise pass by beneficiary designation or trust. It allows you to name guardians for minor children. And it provides clear instructions if something has been overlooked.

In that sense, a will often sits somewhere between beneficiary designations and a trust plan:
✅ Better than relying on Oklahoma's intestate succession laws to decide who gets what
✅ Essential as a backup, even when you have a trust
✅ Not always enough by itself if your goal is to avoid probate

The best estate plans use the right tools for the right purpose. Beneficiary designations, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and wills each play a different role.

A will isn't the entire plan. But it's an important piece of it.

This National Make-A-Will Month, make sure your family has more than good intentions. Make sure they have clear instructions.

Why would an estate planning law firm sponsor a bluegrass musical?

Because The Dust Bowl Radio Hour isn't just a show. It's a story about people finding hope when circumstances seem impossible.

In the midst of the Dust Bowl, a young boy searches for his missing mother. A reluctant radio host helps amplify his voice. What begins as a desperate search becomes a story about being heard, staying connected, and refusing to give up.

We believe those ideas matter.

At Roots Law, we spend our days helping families prepare for uncertainty, strengthen relationships, and preserve what matters most. We know that resilience is built through connection, and that the strongest roots are often formed during difficult seasons.

We're honored to support this production and encourage you to experience it for yourself.

"I feel much better now that I've stopped asking AI about it."

That's how a recent conversation with a client began.

A few years ago, we created an irrevocable trust together and discussed how future changes would need to be handled. Recently, life changed, and the client wanted to understand their options.

Instead of calling first, they asked AI. The questions were coming from a place of anxiety and lack of knowledge, and therefore so were the answers. The entire conversation between the client and the AI was disconnected from the actual trust, the planning objectives, and the legal strategy behind the plan. The result was unnecessary worry and confusion.

After one conversation together, we identified a practical solution and a clear path forward.

The lessons?

1) AI is not your lawyer.

2) And an estate plan is not a one-time transaction.

The best estate plans are reviewed, maintained, and adjusted as life changes. Regular reviews help ensure your plan continues to work the way you intended and can provide something just as valuable as legal protection: Confidence.

🌳 At Roots Law, we're always happy to revisit your plan when life takes an unexpected turn. 🌳

The Dust Bowl Radio Hour is an original bluegrass musical about resilience, connection, and the simple courage of being heard.

A young boy’s mother goes missing in the dust storms. A washed-up local radio host reluctantly helps in the boy’s search, sending a broadcast through the dusty air. What begins as a desperate on-air plea soon turns
into fantastical radio stories about hope.

With an eclectic cast of characters, The
Dust Bowl Radio Hour depicts one of the
darkest chapters in U.S. history though
light and whimsy where it’s least
expected. For those who are lost, and

August is National Make-A-Will Month:

A will is more than just a document.
🍂 It is a final act of care.
🍂 It is clarity when emotions are high.
🍂 It helps preserve relationships.
🍂 It gives loved ones a voice to follow.
🍂 It helps reduce chaos in a crisis.
🍂 It protects children.
🍂 It communicates your values.

During National Make-A-Will Month, remember that estate planning isn't ultimately about documents. It's about people.

A well-crafted will helps ensure that your wishes are known, your loved ones are protected, and your legacy is carried forward with confidence.

Because the greatest gift a will can provide is often peace of mind.
