I have said every week on my Safe Baby Court and Family Treatment Court Zoom calls how much I admire these participants for facing not only their daily struggles with their substance abuse and mental health needs but now the compounded struggles of the COVID pandemic. We may have been in isolation, but the drugs and alcohol continued to be available and ready to offer temporary support when a video meeting or IOP class wasn’t enough to offer them fellowship. And for those struggling with mental health issues, hiding true feelings or needs becomes second nature as they hide behind a telephone in a counseling session.
And we are now seeing these relapses. I know with the continued support of programs like these treatment courts and individuals’ strength, courage and determination, they will once again succeed. But we must recognize this is a unique time that demands more support, compassion and understanding for those in need - not less!
