Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend Yendi Castillo -Reina’s seminar, “Mind Your Time: Using Your Calendar as a Mindfulness Tool.” Two ideas really stuck with me.

The first was to rethink what gets put on the calendar first.

Most of us start with work. We block out meetings, deadlines, court appearances, client calls, and everything else we “have” to do. Then we try to squeeze our personal lives into whatever time is left.

What if we reversed that?

First, schedule the things you need for your own wellness and happiness.

Next, schedule the things that are important for your family and the people you care about.

Then, use the remaining time to schedule the things you need to accomplish at work.

That simple change in priority can help create more balance, freedom, and joy in our lives.

My second big takeaway was even simpler:

Schedule joy.

Actually put time on your calendar every day for something that brings you happiness, energy, peace, fun, or fulfillment.

Those are often the first things we eliminate when life gets busy. We tell ourselves we’ll exercise tomorrow, take the ride next weekend, have dinner with someone we care about when things slow down, or make time for ourselves after we finish everything else.

But everything else is never finished.

Making time for the things that fill our cup isn’t wasted time. It’s what allows us to show up fully present for our clients, colleagues, families, and everyone else who depends on us.

If we continually give without taking the time to refill our own cup, eventually there isn’t much left to give.

Thank you, Castillo-Reina, for the reminder that our calendars shouldn’t just reflect what we have to do. They should also reflect the life we want to live.

I've been a criminal defense attorney and Judge Pro Tempore in Tucson for years.

And the truth is — the attorneys I see struggle most aren't struggling because of their legal skills.

They're struggling because nobody taught them the business side.

How to find clients. How to close consultations. How to collect fees without chasing people down.

Thrive Law Consulting exists to fix that gap.

If you're an early-career solo criminal defense attorney who's tired of the feast-or-famine cycle, follow along — this page is for you.

3 things your criminal defense intake call must accomplish:

1️⃣ Qualify the case — Is this someone you can actually help?
2️⃣ Establish authority — They need to see YOU as the expert before they ever ask price.
3️⃣ Create urgency — Criminal matters move fast. Help them understand why waiting costs them.

If your intake call doesn't do all three, you're leaving retained clients on the table every single week.

Which one do you struggle with most? Drop it below.

Here's something nobody wants to admit:

Most solo criminal defense attorneys lose clients before the first consultation is even over.

Not because they're bad lawyers.

Because the intake process is broken.

No clear pricing. No defined next steps. No system.

The client leaves feeling uncertain — and hires someone else.

A tight intake system is the single highest-leverage fix in your practice. I can break down exactly how to build one.

I just received an email from a participant in my first continuing legal education seminar I presented last week. She wanted to let me know she’s been receiving “amazing results” from incorporating what she learned from my lecture into her initial calls from potential clients. She even created a script for her to use on her initial intake calls and she had great results helping her clients identify exactly what they need her help with. It completely made my day! I’m so excited to be helping people as they help people. Loving this work!
