A disability denial has a next step. For longtime workers whose health ended work, a letter saying no can be hard to face.

Social Security explains how to ask for an appeal. Read the decision letter for the right step and deadline. Starting a new application is not the same as appealing that decision.

Use the official guide below. Keep proof that the appeal was sent; saving a draft is not the same as submitting it. An appeal does not promise approval.

Put the date somewhere it will be seen.

Find free legal-help options for a rent or debt problem. Lost work income can bring more than one kind of paperwork.

USA.gov points to civil legal-aid services for issues such as housing and debt. Each group decides who it can help and which cases it can take. Free help is not guaranteed.

Use the government guide to find a local contact. Have any court papers and dates ready.

A court deadline should not sit at the bottom of the mail pile.

There is no Social Security application fee. For longtime workers whose health has stopped work, starting a disability claim should not mean paying the agency to open a form.

Social Security does not charge to apply. Its official page explains how to start online or get help from the agency. Not every person can finish every step online.

Private legal help has separate fee rules. A free application does not mean a claim will be approved.

Start with the agency’s own page, not a paid form site.

Get the records without another paper hunt. A new doctor or disability claim can mean needing old visit notes.

Try this with the provider: “How do I get a copy of my records? Can I get an electronic copy, and what will it cost?”

HHS, the federal health department, explains the right to see and get copies of records from covered providers and health plans, with some exceptions. A reasonable copy fee may apply.

Keep the request date with the provider’s name. One less thing to remember.

Find the local office for rent help. Rent keeps its due date when work income falls.

USA.gov has a guide to emergency rent help and ways to find local programs. Start there to find the right contact, then ask what is open and how to apply.

Rules and help vary by place. Ask what help is open. A listing is not a promise that rent will be paid.

For a court letter or eviction deadline, seek local legal help promptly as well. Keep the letter close when calling.

Ask about a lower-cost dental visit. Job changes can mean losing dental coverage, too.

Some health centers offer dental care with fees based on ability to pay. Use the federal health agency HRSA’s free finder, then call the center.

Ask: “Do you offer dental care? Are you taking new patients? How do I ask about fees based on income?”

Not every center offers every service, and care is not always free. Check the visit cost before booking.

The price is a fair question to ask first.

Check where a disability claim stands. After years on the job, waiting on paperwork can feel like another job.

Social Security has an online page to check an application or appeal. Start at the official address below and sign in.

It can show the claim’s place in the process and an expected decision time. An estimate is not a promise. The status page reports progress; it does not promise a decision date.

Keep the login in a safe place, not in a public comment.

Find health coverage after job insurance ends. People who lose job-based health insurance can apply for a Marketplace plan outside the usual signup dates.

HealthCare.gov says to apply within 60 days of losing that coverage. The date coverage ends may differ from the last day at work.

This can matter when illness ends a job before Medicare starts. Plans are not always free, and coverage does not always start the day someone applies.

Keep the letter with the coverage end date.
