What happens in Michigan’s northwoods does not stay in the northwoods. Our northern forests help protect water, improve air quality, store carbon, and sustain ecosystems that matter far beyond the places themselves. But the health of these large forested areas is under threat by the USDA’s plans to roll back the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This article about ‘s Great Northwoods Initiative is an important reminder that protecting forests, waters, and public lands in northern Michigan is connected to the health of communities across our whole state. AI runs on massive data centers, and they’re expanding quickly and proposed across Michigan. These facilities use enormous amounts of energy and water, often with limited transparency and real impacts on local communities. We need accountability in how these projects are approved and who bears the cost. If this matters to you, consider signing MiCAN’s letter calling for a moratorium on new data centers until stronger protections are in place:

⚡️🌞 Touring Michigan’s first virtual power plant in Ann Arbor last week - - with offered a glimpse of what the clean energy future really looks like: one that’s more local, resilient and affordable.

A virtual power plant (VPP) links numerous distributed resources — like home solar panels, batteries, EVs, and smart appliances — to operate together as a flexible, reliable energy network. Instead of relying on one big power plant, we can share power across communities, strengthening the grid and cutting costs for everyone.

If you look closely you can see solar panels on each rooftop!

That future is already taking shape. As reported by the Associated Press in early October, for the first half of 2025 worldwide solar and wind power generation has outpaced electricity demand this year, and for the first time on record, renewable energies combined generated more power than coal. At Teichner Law, we’re proud to support the legal and regulatory foundations for a clean, resilient, and equitable energy system in Michigan.

🌍⚖️ On July 23, the International Court of Justice issued its first-ever advisory opinion on climate change, and it’s a game-changer. The court made it crystal clear: countries have binding legal obligations under international law to prevent climate harm and protect human rights from the impacts of the climate crisis.

This means:
🔹 Governments can’t keep dragging their feet.
🔹 Emissions reduction isn’t optional, it’s legally required.
🔹 Climate inaction is a violation of fundamental rights.

The opinion draws a bold, bright line between climate harm and human rights, echoing what frontline communities have said for years: climate justice is human rights.

This isn’t just symbolic. It’s a powerful tool for activists, lawyers, and impacted people around the world demanding accountability from leaders.

Let’s keep pushing for climate action in the courts, in our communities, and in the streets. 💪🌱
