Key Changes to Michigan Landlord Tenant Law: If you are a landlord, contact Lynch Law today to better know your rights:

Michigan has implemented significant changes to its landlord-tenant law, effective November 6, 2023. At the initial trial date, courts must now verbally inform tenants of their rights, including the right to an attorney, proper venue, and jury trial. The eviction process has been modified with additional steps for default judgments and potential stays for tenants seeking rental assistance. New conditions for entering defaults have been established, requiring proper service and sufficient pleading. For nonpayment cases, proceedings must be stayed if the tenant applies for rental assistance within 5 days of being informed of their rights, with stays lasting up to 28 days. If a trial is adjourned, it must be rescheduled within 7-14 days. These changes aim to provide more tenant protections while establishing clearer procedures for landlords, who should familiarize themselves with these new requirements to ensure compliance in eviction proceedings.

Remote Proceedings are here and we could not be happier. From the State Bar of Michigan: "ONLINE PROCEEDINGS TO CONTINUE IN MICHIGAN COURTS FROM THE COURT

State Court Administrator Tom Boyd has said, “Remote proceedings are here to stay.” Nearly 1,000 judges, magistrates, and referees have Zoom licenses and have presided over more than 3 million hours of online proceedings. The result? Parties and their attorneys love it. On the other hand, a thorough exploration of how to conduct a remote jury trial taught us that for some proceedings, there is no substitute for in-person, face-to-face attendance.

But for most proceedings, Michigan courts are not going back to the old way. This is no time to retreat from the use of technologies and new practices that have brought us so far. In fact, many of the administrative orders the Court adopted in the last year remain in full effect and prescribe the path forward."

The Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association, a non-profit organization of over 170 attorneys based in northwestern lower Michigan, has donated funds to a local entity to help provide food to members of our community who have been impacted by COVID-19. JS Project Feed the Kids through J&S Hamburg South Airport in Grand Traverse County was presented with a check in the amount of $1,000 on September 3, 2020.
