5 PROPERTY TAX MYTHS THAT CAN COST YOU 💸
1️⃣ “My taxes will match the seller’s.”
Usually not. Buying generally resets the home’s assessed value to current market value. The seller’s tax bill isn’t your estimate.
2️⃣ “My lender handles every tax bill.”
Don’t assume that. A separate supplemental bill may come directly to you. Check who will pay it before the deadline.
3️⃣ “Every renovation raises my property taxes.”
Not necessarily. Adding a bedroom may increase your assessment. Replacing cabinets and countertops usually won’t.
4️⃣ “Moving means losing my low property tax base.”
If you’re 55 or older, Prop 19 may let you transfer your tax base up to three times within California. Rules and deadlines apply.
5️⃣ “No bill means no payment due.”
Missing mail doesn’t stop the deadline. You’re still responsible for paying on time.
💡 JUST 1™ TIP: Before buying, budget for your estimated new taxes AND a possible supplemental bill.
