What happens if one parent wins the lottery, hits it big at a casino, or receives a significant inheritance? Does that money factor into child support?

In Maryland, the answer is: it can. Maryland courts cast a wide net when it comes to what counts as income, and windfall money is no exception. Under Maryland Family Law Code § 12-201, courts MAY consider the following as actual income depending on the circumstances of the case:

💸 Severance pay
📈 Capital gains
🎁 Gifts
🎰 Prizes

Whether these items factor into child support is ultimately at the court's discretion, and there is no automatic rule.

One thing worth keeping in mind: a windfall is not recurring income. A one-time inheritance or gambling win is not something a parent can count on year after year, and that distinction matters. If a windfall gets factored into the calculation, it may need to be revisited once that money is no longer in the picture.

I was proud to sponsor the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service's A Taste for Pro Bono at M&T Bank Stadium, an evening celebrating 45 years of advancing access to justice across Maryland.

Giving back has always mattered to me. I take on pro bono cases regularly, and supporting MVLS felt like a natural extension of that commitment. The work this organization does, providing free civil legal assistance to Marylanders who could not otherwise afford representation, is exactly the kind of work our profession should rally behind.

It was a wonderful evening with attorneys, volunteers, and community partners who share that belief.

I am proud to be a facilitator at this year's MSBA Legal Summit, and especially proud of the session I get to be part of on June 11.

"Beyond Roe: Women, Law and Leadership in a Changing Landscape" brings together incredible women from across Maryland's legal community to examine how the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade continues to shape the practice of law, the administration of justice, and the role of women as legal professionals and leaders. The session will open with remarks from Women's Bar Association of Maryland leadership, followed by a roundtable designed to foster real dialogue among practitioners at every career stage.

This is exactly the kind of conversation our profession needs to be having, and I am honored to be in the room for it.
