An 80-year-old woman and her 17-year-old granddaughter were waiting to be seated when a pickup truck came through the front of the Fenwick Island restaurant.

Police say an elderly driver was pulling into a handicapped parking space and letting his wife out when his foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas.

The truck went over the parking barrier and straight into Mancini’s.

The grandmother was pinned against a counter.

Her granddaughter was trapped underneath the truck.

The impact caused part of the front of the building to begin collapsing around them, forcing rescue crews to stabilize the structure before they could get them out.

Both were flown to Christiana Medical Center.

The 80-year-old grandmother later died.

Her granddaughter was reported in serious condition.

They were simply waiting for a table when everything changed in seconds.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

BEACH TRAFFIC UPDATE: FENWICK ISLAND

If you’re heading to or from the beach through Fenwick right now, be prepared. We are getting reports of two serious crashes happening within blocks of each other.

One vehicle reportedly crashed into Mancini’s Italian Restaurant on Coastal Highway. Multiple emergency units are on scene, including technical rescue crews.

Then, just about two blocks away, there is reportedly another horrendous crash.

We are being told two medevac helicopters are landing for that second crash.

This is all happening during Friday evening beach traffic.

Expect significant emergency activity and traffic problems through Fenwick. Give first responders plenty of room and avoid the area if you can.

We’re working on getting more information and will update as we confirm it.

“BUT HE PASSED A BACKGROUND CHECK.”

I keep seeing this with every recent arrest involving someone who worked with children.

A background check is only as good as the records that exist.

If someone has never been arrested, charged or convicted, what exactly do you expect a criminal background check to find?

It is not a polygraph.

It is not an interrogation.

It is not someone interviewing friends, employers and neighbors about concerning behavior.

Some federal security-clearance investigations can dig deeply into a person’s history, contacts, finances and conduct. Certain sensitive positions may even require a polygraph.

That is NOT the same thing as the background check generally used for a teacher, coach or youth volunteer.

A criminal background check essentially asks:

“Is there something in the records we searched?”

It does NOT answer:

“Has this person ever done something wrong?”

That is a HUGE difference.

So maybe we need to stop asking:

“How did he pass the background check?”

And start asking:

“Were there warning signs that would NEVER have shown up on one?”
