Estate planning is not only about finances. It is about protecting the people you love most.

In this video, Christine Matus discusses why having a plan matters for both minor and adult children. Naming guardians allows parents in New Jersey to choose who would raise their children if the unexpected happens. For adult children, clear legal documents reduce confusion, court involvement, and stressful decisions during already emotional times.

The greatest gift you can leave your family is clarity and protection. Call our office at 732-281-0060 to begin putting the right plan in place.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is a reminder of the emotional, physical, and financial impact memory-related illnesses have on families everywhere.

For many families, watching a loved one experience cognitive decline brings uncertainty and difficult decisions. It also highlights the importance of planning early, having conversations sooner, and ensuring the right legal and care structures are in place before a crisis occurs.

This month, we honor caregivers, support families navigating these challenges, and raise awareness about the importance of compassion, dignity, and proactive planning.

Many New Jersey families delay planning because they believe common Medicaid myths.

Myth 1: We have to spend everything before Mom qualifies.
Myth 2: Medicaid will take the house immediately.
Myth 3: It is too late to plan once she is already in a facility.

In reality, long-term care estate planning can provide strategies that protect certain assets and reduce financial stress during elder care. Our New Jersey law firm helps families navigate senior care and senior caregiving decisions with clarity instead of fear. Call 732-281-0060 to discuss your options.

Last week, after an exciting year as President of the Ocean County Bar Association, Christine Matus passed the gavel to the 2026 president, Jaime Schron.

During her tenure, the OCBA board strengthened connections within the board, brought back The Sidebar newsletter, and continued to serve the community of Ocean County.

In addition, our attorneys Kristine Carranceja-Gurski and Caitlin Pennell were appointed as Trustees of the new OCBA board.

We are incredibly proud of the leadership shown by all of them and wish Kristine and Caitlin a successful tenure ahead.

This is by far the biggest mistake. People spend time and money setting up a trust, but then they leave it completely empty.
The Fix: You have to actually transfer your assets into the name of the trust. That means updating the deeds to your real estate, changing ownership of your bank accounts, and updating your non-retirement investment accounts. If it's not in the trust, the trust can't control it.

Many New Jersey families worry about what will happen to Mom’s house if she needs nursing home care.

When applying for Medicaid, the home may be treated as an exempt asset for eligibility. However, that does not automatically protect it. After Mom passes, the state may pursue estate recovery to seek reimbursement for senior care expenses unless proper long-term care estate planning has been done.

Planning tools, such as Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts, can help protect the home while navigating elder and senior caregiving responsibilities. Our New Jersey law firm can guide you through the process. Call 732-281-0060 to protect your family home.
