American road work zone fatalities increased 50 percent between 2013 and 2023. In 2023 alone, over 898 work zone fatalities were recorded.
Additionally, over 101,000 work zone crashes were recorded estimated to have resulted in over 40,000 injuries.
When struck by a median U.S. pickup, a 2024 IIHS study found that a pedestrian worker has an 85% likelihood of severe injury at just 33 mph and an 85% likelihood of dying at just 45 mph.
