Dog Attacks/Bites: Protect Yourself
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that dog bites occur about 4.5 million times a year. In addition to the danger from the bite itself, about 20 percent of those bites become infected. Men are at risk of being bitten more frequently than women, while children and elderly people are also vulnerable. However, there are things all people can do to help prevent a dog from biting.
• Don’t go near a dog that is unfamiliar to you.
• Don’t turn your back and don’t run. According to Cesar Millan, the dog training expert, running can make the dog’s prey instinct kick in.
• Don’t bother a dog that is asleep, eating or caring for its puppies.
• Don’t allow a dog to show aggression when playing.
• Don’t just walk up to a dog and pet it. Allow the dog to sniff you first to get acquainted.
• Don’t get loud and don’t panic.
• Small children should never be allowed to play with a dog without being supervised.
What to Do When a Dog Approaches
In addition, there are things you can do if you are approached by an unfamiliar dog.
• Remain calm.
• Once again, don’t use a loud voice and don’t panic.
• Use a deep, firm voice to say “go home” or “no.”
• Turn your body to the side and remain absolutely still. Facing a dog and making direct eye contact can be perceived as acts of aggression.
• Raise your arms slowly to place your hands at your neck, and keep elbows in toward your body.
Dog Bites Can Cause Infection
Dog bites can cause serious infection, particularly in those who have compromised immune systems, liver disease, diabetes or other conditions. According to Medscape, a dog bite may look like a laceration but since a dog can exert between 150 and 450 pounds of pressure per square inch when biting down, an injury more closely resembles a crush injury.
Injuries and Diseases Contracted by a Dog Bite
The types of injuries from dog bites may include anything from damage to the hands to head injuries and can result in permanent scarring and psychological trauma. A certain percentage of dog bites can result in infection or require plastic surgery to repair. In addition, dogs, although they seldom carry rabies, can also carry other diseases such as MRSA, tetanus or pasteurella. Anyone who receives a dog bite should seek medical attention to avoid infection or other complications.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM DISTRACTED DRIVERS:
Distraction while driving is a major source of risk. Since driving is usually part of daily life for most American adults, they tend to take for granted the fact that they will arrive safely at their intended destination. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
Failing to pay adequate attention to the task of maneuvering the vehicle and monitoring traffic can drastically increase the risk to everyone on the road. Let's face it, many, if not most, people struggle with addictions to their mobile phones.
It is also important to realize that phones are only one of many potential sources of distraction. The more you understand distracted driving, the better you will be able to protect yourself from dangerous drivers not paying attention to the road.
Drivers holding their phones are a red flag!
Obviously, people staring at their phones or driving with a phone in their hand are probably not fully engaged with the task of driving. If you see someone's phone in their face, that is a good reason to give their vehicle a wide berth in traffic.
You should also look for the telltale lack of hands on the wheel or the blue light of the phone from their lap, which is particularly visible once it gets dark outside. Despite laws against texting while driving, people still do it all the time.
Many people multitask during their commute:
Many people will do anything to minimize the amount of time it takes to get ready for work. They may choose to finish dressing while driving. Some will brush their hair, brush their teeth or apply makeup in their visor mirror.
All of these tasks take your hands off of the wheel. They take your eyes off the road and your mind off of safety. Avoid anyone who appears to be grooming or dressing themselves, as well as people eating and drinking while driving.
If you wind up hurt in a crash caused by someone distracted at the time of the collision, you may be able to take legal action against the person responsible. An experienced personal injury attorney can help you explore your options for compensation after a major crash.

Involved in a Car Accident?
Here’s what ya’ need to do:
No matter how safely you drive, car accidents are unavoidable. Depending on how well you handle the aftermath of the accident, with the assistance of The Boerst Law Office, you could potentially settle your claim without issues and recover damages for any injuries you've suffered. If you're wondering what to do after a car accident, the checklists below will help you protect yourself and your interests in the aftermath of an accident.
Before the Accident: Be Prepared
Car accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. Therefore, you should always carry the following necessary items in your car to avoid any penalties and inconvenience.
Keep a copy of the Motor Vehicle Accidents checklist in your vehicle.
Have your insurance card, driver's license, and registration with you or in your vehicle at all times.
Keep a safety kit in your vehicle.
What to Do At the Accident Scene
Experiencing any type of car accident can be frightening and overwhelming. It can be difficult to immediately think of what to do at the accident scene. However, you should try your best to stay calm and cooperate with others. Here are some important steps to take at the accident scene to protect your rights.
Stay at the scene. Take a deep breath and try not to panic.
Check yourself, other drivers, and passengers for injuries. Call the ambulance if anyone is in need of medical attention.
Call the police if there are injuries, death, or property damage. Even if no one is injured, it's a good idea to call the police, so they can document the accident. You can file a police report later, but it is good to do it immediately to record accurate information.
Move the vehicles out of traffic on the side of the road if the accident is minor.
Turn on your vehicle's hazard lights.
Take photos of the damage and surrounding area, if possible.
Gather information by taking notes on the details of the accident scene to preserve as much evidence as you can.
Gather information on other drivers who may be responsible for the accident. Get his or her name, address, contact number, insurance company name and policy number. You should provide the same information to the other driver only - do not give personal information to other drivers, passengers, or witnesses.
Talk to witnesses and get their information.
Do not sign any papers (unless it's for the police).
Do not admit fault or discuss the incident.
Do not allow your license or registration to be photographed by others.
Do not leave the accident scene until the police and other drivers do.
Things to Do After Leaving the Accident Scene
After you leave the accident scene, there are additional steps you should immediately take to protect your rights and recover any damages you've suffered.
Contact The Boerst Law Office immediately.
Then, with our assistance, we will contact your insurance company and tell them what happened as soon as possible and obtain copy of the accident report filed by the police or other drivers.
Make sure to:
Keep detailed notes on your injuries and physical and mental conditions.
Track your medical treatment.
Get a property damage valuation.
Keep in contact with The Boerst Law Office to protect your rights. Before you provide any statements to the other driver or his or her insurance company, you should seek legal advice to receive full compensation for the damages you suffered.
Discuss Your Car Accident Claim with a Lawyer
Handling the aftermath of a car accident can be overwhelming. Most of the time, your insurance company will give you directions to file a claim. However, you should be wary of early settlement offers. Contact an injury lawyer at The Boerst Law Office who can help you to maximize the amount of damages you can recover.
