As you may know, I represent 13 of the 19 defendants cited by the Statesville Police Department for “noise violations” primarily for honking their horn at the very first “No Kings” rally held in Statesville on June 12, 2025. The District Attorney wisely dismissed all of the charges. Now we’re about halfway in the process of suing the SPD and the City of Statesville for violating their constitutional rights. I did not attend that rally but there were only about 100-150 in attendance.

Today I attended and observed the rally. I also drove past the intersection of Broad and Center streets where today’s “No Kings” rally was being held — twice — honking my horn in support of the rally to cheers of the crowd with at least five SPD officers observing, but not stopping me.

This time I would estimate at least 500-600 people were in attendance.

As you can see from my video, numerous supporters took advantage of their constitutional rights and honked their car horns in support as well.

None received even a passing glance from the officers — much less cited for “breaking the law.”

So, having inherited my mother’s gall, I walked up to an officer Koontz and said:
“I take it you’re not citing people for a noise violation for honking their horns at today’s rally?” to which he curtly responded, “No.”

Hmmm, I wonder what changed?
