Got something to say or exhibit that may not be appropriate for a six-year-old eating a funnel cake to hear or see? Then you’re welcome to mosey on up to this “free speech zone” located right behind our law office.

Stand up behind the soap box and pontificate to your heart’s content. Religion? Politics? Social issues? It doesn’t matter. Say anything you want in our judgment-free zone. Take pictures, make a video. The choice of forum is yours. Have fun giving everybody “what for.”

Im attending a Continuing Legal Education program today entitled “Practical Family Law 2026” sponsored by the Rowan County Bar Association in Salisbury.

The current presenter is Katie H. King of the Wake Family Law Group. Her topic is “Grandparent Rights: Standing, Procedure, and Practice.”

Grandparents have more rights than they think for custody and visitation.

I’m attending the annual Rowan County Bar Association Criminal Law Continuing Legal Education seminar today. One of the most riveting presentations was conducted by Shawnda Drummond, with over 20 years experience as a Special Agent for the FBI serving as a Polygraph Examiner and as a Supervisory Special Agent and Acting Unit Chief of the Polygraph Unit at FBI Headquarters.

She is now the founder of Monarch Polygraph of Charlotte conducting polygraph exams for private sector industries and local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as the private clients of trial lawyers like myself.

Polygraph tests are NOT admissible in court despite having a 87-92% rating of accuracy.

But lawyers like myself are able to use experts like her to test our clients who need to show their “veracity” of telling the truth concerning their innocence in a criminal matter while the district attorney is conducting an investigation whether to charge my client or not.

She demonstrated a polygraph examination live showing how accurate these tests can be.

And no, wiggling your toes doesn’t work to “beat” them.

Joel was named to the Super Lawyers list in the practice area of criminal defense. This marks the seventh consecutive year he has received this designation.

This is my 47th anniversary of practicing law. I’m grateful to my family, friends, staff — and clients — for giving me the privilege to serve you for nearly five decades.

When do I plan to retire?

I don’t.

I have always thoroughly enjoyed being a trial lawyer. As long as God gives me the ability, I will continue my passion and calling.
