Zach McCormick Attorney at Law, PLLC (hereafter "ZJM LAW") is a small civil litigation firm located in Tavares, Florida (Lake County, FL). Zach McCormick is the Managing Attorney and James Hope is the firm's "Of-Counsel".
The firm is looking for a Junior Litigation Associate (hereafter "JLA") to work case files currently held by the firm. This is an 'entry-level position' and on-the-job training will be afforded by ZJM LAW.
The base-rate of pay for a licensed attorney is $46,000 plus incentive pay.
The base-rate of pay for a certified legal intern (who has passed the character and fitness evaluation with the Florida Bar and who is otherwise eligible to become a licensed Florida Attorney but-for the COVID pandemic) is $38,000 with incentive pay with an immediate increase to $46,000 upon obtaining Fla. Bar licensure.
This position is 'full time-exempt' however, actual working hours are flexible (and at times varied) and telecommuting/ virtual office work is available and incentive pay is correlated to hitting billable hour benchmarks. The JLA will need to be available in-person for firm round-table meetings held at least twice a month as well as in instances where required by the Managing Attorney.
This position requires strong writing and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have the ability to draft motions and memoranda within time-frames that are, at times, short. It is imperative that even in the face of such deadlines that the JLA be capable of standing firm under the pressure of other trying situations such as depositions, hearings or trials. The ability to think dynamically is essential as, at times, the work environment can change dramatically as cases may be re-prioritized as new facts emerge.
ZJM LAW is a small firm and very team oriented with a focus on work/life balance. The JLA will be treated with respect and dignity but the must return the same. This means, being on time, dressing appropriately, maintaining appropriate workplace hygiene (clothes ironed, facial hair cleanly maintained etc...) working cases diligently and representing the 'firm brand' by delivering the highest levels of performance. A JLA will be trained by the Managing Attorney until, in the eyes of the Managing Attorney, the JLA is competent to work case files on their own.
The JLA must be competent and familiar with the use of law office management software for time-tracking and file management and must be comfortable utilizing services such as Gmail, Dropbox, Microsoft Word, Westlaw, Slack and Zoom from desktop, laptop, tablet and handheld devices.
The JLA will be expected to dress and otherwise present professionally at all times where they are representing the firm's interests in front of a client, judge, opposing counsel or the public at large (this includes via virtual means including Zoom). This requirement extends to the JLA's visual background so far as it is visible (and audible) to the camera being used for the virtual work.
The JLA must have a valid Florida driver's license and must be in good standing with the Florida Bar.
All candidates are encouraged to submit a writing sample with their CV and cover-letter.
Top candidates will be invited to attend a 'day-in-the-life' interview wherein they 'shadow' the managing attorney and observe how the law office operates. Selected candidates should come prepared to show initiative and participate (where appropriate) in the events during such an interview so as to demonstrate their skill set in a practical manner.

The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and self motivated. What this means in the practical sense is that the winning applicant will have to be able to proof-read pleadings for spelling and grammar in a timely manner. Further, the best fitting candidate will not require constant supervision or direction but will instead seek to 'solve' the problem by researching the solution so as to answer the question for themselves.

The office is professional and the ideal candidate will need to 'mesh' with other members of the team and interpersonal skills are essential. This person will, more often than not, be the 'face' (and voice) of the office and must be able to handle a wide variety of personality types with poise and tact so as to represent the firm's professional image appropriately.

The winning applicant will enjoy a high level of autonomy and mutual respect and the same is expected in return. The ideal candidate should be seeking a long-term position and can expect to receive 'on the job' training.

This job is rewarding for the right candidate but is at times stressful. Standard working hours are usually followed however, in advance of filing deadlines or court-dates, it is very common to have to put in extra time (which the candidate will be compensated for accordingly).

The ability to multi-task is essential as interruptions will occur via a variety of means. For example, a candidate may be working on drafting a pleading and the phone will ring. That candidate will need to be able to pause what they are doing, answer the call and act accordingly, and then return to the original task and complete it correctly.

Although this can be a demanding job, the work environment is very collegiate and team oriented. Work schedule flexibility is afforded freely as needed and morale is of the utmost importance. A high level of priority is placed on quality of life and 'work-life' balance. The right candidate will be treated as an adult and expected not to abuse the trust and confidence placed in them. That said, the environment is friendly and fulfilling with opportunity for increases in both compensation and professional advancement in the long term.

Please provide references for a minimum of the last three (3) jobs. References will be contacted.

A big congratulations to Ms. Krissinda Matheny who is the 2017 Lake County Teen Court Award for Excellence recipient. It was my pleasure to be able to sponsor and present her with her certificate of achievement and a $100 grant for her efforts. She demonstrated superior court room advocacy skills and command of the the tenants and principles that the Teen Court program exemplifies.

A special thank you to Stephanie Glass who is our outgoing Teen Court Coordinator. To say that she went "above and beyond" is a profound understatement. You have our thanks Steph! We wish you the best of luck in your new position!
