ICE Agents Disguised as Construction Workers Open Fire in New York

A troubling incident in New York City is raising serious concerns about immigration enforcement tactics and public safety.

According to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, ICE agents wearing construction vests and face coverings surrounded a vehicle before shots were fired. Even more alarming, a five-year-old child was reportedly inside the vehicle, and the incident occurred near families and children shortly after school dismissal.

This raises important questions: Should federal immigration agents be conducting operations while disguised as civilian workers? What safeguards are in place to protect innocent bystanders, especially children?

Immigration enforcement must respect constitutional rights, public safety, and accountability.

Enforcing immigration laws should never come at the expense of innocent lives.

NEW VISA RULE EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2026 🇺🇸

Starting October 1, 2026, the U.S. Department of State expanded its online presence review to additional nonimmigrant visa applicants.

Under the new expansion, applicants for I visas (foreign media representatives), TN visas, and TD visas are instructed to set the privacy settings on all social media profiles to “public” or “open” to facilitate the government’s vetting process.

This is an expansion of an existing policy. Social-media vetting and public-profile instructions already apply to several other categories, including certain F, M, J, H, K, R, Q, S, T and U visa applicants, as well as certain diplomatic and official visa categories.

The Department of State says online presence may be reviewed as part of determining an applicant’s identity, admissibility, eligibility for the visa, and whether the intended activities are consistent with the visa requested.

Federal immigration agents have authority—but that authority comes with rules and accountability.

During a congressional exchange, an official was questioned about ICE agents using pepper spray on a moving vehicle carrying a family, including a one-year-old child.

When asked if this was proper procedure, the answer was clear: “No, it’s not proper.”

Immigration laws must be enforced while respecting established procedures and standards for the use of force.

Is there a legal immigration system that works?

During a congressional discussion on immigration, Rep. Pramila Jayapal questioned immigration policy expert David Bier about the current U.S. immigration system — including the long waits for family-based Green Cards, legal pathways for workers, immigration enforcement, public safety, and the economic impact of immigrants in the United States.
One of the most striking points raised in the exchange: some family-based immigration categories are still processing cases with priority dates dating back more than two decades.
The discussion highlights something immigration attorneys see every day: having a legal pathway does not necessarily mean having a fast or simple pathway. Depending on the immigration category and country of birth, families can face years — and sometimes decades — of waiting.

🚨 CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID TO GO TO SCHOOL.

Reports of children being arrested or detained at or near bus stops are deeply concerning. A school bus stop should be a place where kids wait for their ride to class — not a place where they fear being taken away.

Parents and families: know your rights, have an emergency plan, and make sure your children know who to contact if something happens.

“My family came to this country the right way.”

But what were the rules when your family arrived?

In 1790, U.S. naturalization law limited citizenship to “free white persons.” In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act specifically restricted Chinese immigration.

Meanwhile, for much of the 1800s, many European immigrants entered the United States without facing today’s system of visas, numerical limits, and years-long waiting lists.

Immigration laws have never affected everyone equally.

Before comparing today’s immigrants to our ancestors, we should also compare the laws they faced.
