Interesting article that showed up today on Yahoo! Not sure I agree with everything the author states, but I do agree that the cost of divorce most likely has a direct correlation to your location. Even here in the Tampa area, attorney's hourly rates vary drastically based on where that attorney is located and the clientele they take on. I'd like to think of myself as being "middle of the road" when it comes to hourly rates, and I most likely can raise my rate based on the years of practice, but I'm not like that. I do, however, agree with the author that mediating (and/or going the collaborative route) is generally the best option not only in terms of keeping rates/costs down, but in reaching a solution that both parties can (hopefully) live with. Please know that I am a FL Supreme Court Certified Mediator, as well as a litigator. I'd b e happy to help in any way I can.

I've been practicing family law a loooong time (20+ years). I have to say, I don't believe I've ever encountered some of the petty, vindictive stuff in this article. Guess that makes me pretty lucky, all in all. My craziest still has to be the couple who were fighting over laundry detergent and diet soda (I still believe the husband-not my client- had OCD).

"When the husband delivered the wife's share of the pots to our office, he took a crap in each one of them. It was a whole big incident."

PSA: The Florida Courts e-filing portal has increased the fee for credit card charges. Per the FL Bar: Effective July 1, the credit card convenience fee will increase to 3.95%, while the ACH fee will remain unchanged at $5.

In my practice, it would only apply to the re-open filing fees (which are typically $50), as the percentage added to the filing fees is less than the flat $5 for ACH, and vice versa for the higher filing fees where the percentage is well over the flat $5 for ACH.
