This is not a comment on whether or not the action was wrong or who was "justified", but it is a comment on how this incident is a quintessential example of how laws work for the rich. Will Smith was able to continue to sit there, get an award, and go to the after-party.

Sure a normal defendant *may* be able to fight the charge, but they would not be able to fight the ride to the jail. Smith clearly threw the first punch and has no affirmative defenses. A lot of defendants cant afford the bail and are forced to take pleas in order to get released from jail and get back to work.
