A bit delayed, but still worth sharing how great the Carrollwood Area Business Association’s 40th Anniversary CABA Royale Gala at the Bob Buckhorn River Center was on May 8th. Casino games, dancing, and a lot of good conversations with local business owners. For the record, Sean had a legendary craps roll that boosted everyone’s chip count at the table!

Two new posts on the blog this week!

The Supreme Court declined to hear Eli Lilly’s appeal of a $220 million False Claims Act judgment, leaving a whistleblower’s victory intact and keeping qui tam rights fully enforceable. If you have knowledge of fraud against the government, the law remains one of the most powerful tools available.

Separately, a Florida federal judge sanctioned a state agency supervisor for submitting false sworn statements in a First Amendment retaliation case involving a government employee fired over a social media post. The court also awarded attorney’s fees after finding that defense counsel tried to minimize the dishonesty rather than address it.

Washington just signed a law that will void nearly all noncompete agreements in the state, including ones already in effect. It takes effect June 30, 2027, and employers will be required to notify current and former employees that their noncompetes are no longer enforceable. This is part of a growing wave of states banning or severely restricting noncompetes. Even if your business isn’t in Washington, the trend is worth paying attention to.

Tip credit rules are one of those things a lot of hospitality employers think they have figured out until they don’t. Between the 80/20 rule getting vacated in some circuits but not others, states moving to eliminate the tip credit entirely, and pending changes in cities like New York and Chicago, compliance heading into summer 2026 is more jurisdiction-specific than ever. We broke it all down on the blog.
