Many employment agreements contain a clause that shortens the window an employee has to sue. The Fourth Circuit just held that those clauses are unenforceable when applied to discrimination claims under Title VII and the ADEA, and the Sixth Circuit has reached the same conclusion. Worth a read whether you signed one of these agreements or you're an employer still using them.

If you signed an employment agreement before your first day of work, you may not have read every line. Most people don’t. But buried in some of those

Day 3 wrapped up the Florida Bar Annual Convention.

The General Assembly saw Michael Fox Orr sworn in as the Bar’s 78th president and Paige Greenlee installed as president-elect. Judge Scales’ introduction of Orr was an all-timer. If you were in the room, you know.

A proud moment closer to home: our own Partner Sean Estes was voted onto the Executive Council of the Solo & Small Firm Section of the Florida Bar. Looking forward to the work ahead!

The convention closed out with the President’s Red, White, and Blue cowboy-themed reception, capped by a concert from Walker Hayes. A great way to send everyone home!

Day 2 at the Florida Bar Annual Convention covered a lot of ground.

We were proud to sponsor the Judicial Luncheon Honoring Florida’s Judiciary, where Chief Justice Carlos G. Muñiz delivered the State of the Judiciary address.

Also caught up with the team at 8am, one of our favorite vendors, and made time for the puppy pit, because some priorities are non-negotiable.

The convention leaned into this year’s “Framework of Freedom” theme with a history display on the founding fathers and an appellate reception that went all in: a 40 foot ship and colonial actors.

Excellent day all around.

Day 1 of the Florida Bar Annual Convention at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek is in the books. This year’s theme is "The Framework of Freedom."

Partner Sean Estes serves on the Convention’s planning committee. Yesterday, he had the opportunity to attend a cybersecurity resilience seminar that was genuinely useful. Practical takeaways on protecting client data and keeping a practice running when things go wrong, not just abstract warnings.

He then capped the day off as a guest of InfoTrack and Clio at Top Golf. A great way to unwind and catch up with colleagues.

A big thanks to .legal.ai for having us in their suite for Chris Stapleton on Saturday. Great music, great food, and great conversations. The kind of evening that reminds you how much of this business comes down to relationships. Thank you again!

Letting people go is one of the hardest things an employer does, and the legal exposure often comes from how the process is handled, not whether the underlying decision was sound. We put together a few pieces for employers thinking through this: rebuilding trust and avoiding risk after a layoff, when a Performance Improvement Plan can cross the line into an adverse employment action, and how to use severance strategically instead of treating it as a routine step out the door.

A reduction in force is one of the hardest decisions any organization makes. Even when the business case is clear, the human impact is not. Jobs are lost,

Partner Sean Estes had the pleasure of attending the investiture of the Honorable Luis E. Rivera II, the newest bankruptcy judge for the Middle District of Florida. The reception at the Tampa Museum of Art was something special. Judge Rivera brings deep experience in bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, and business litigation to the bench, and the turnout from the Tampa Bay legal community speaks volumes about the respect he’s earned. Congratulations, Judge Rivera!

Last night was the HCBA Barristers’ Bash at the Bob Buckhorn River Center, where the new slate of officers and directors was officially installed. Always good to catch up with colleagues from around the Hillsborough County legal community, and the food and music did not disappoint! A great way to close out the HCBA year!

A bit delayed, but still worth sharing how great the Carrollwood Area Business Association’s 40th Anniversary CABA Royale Gala at the Bob Buckhorn River Center was on May 8th. Casino games, dancing, and a lot of good conversations with local business owners. For the record, Sean had a legendary craps roll that boosted everyone’s chip count at the table!
