Not all mediators bring the same experience to the table, and that difference shows up in how your sessions go. Before you commit to anyone, ask how many family mediations they've handled and how they respond when a session gets heated. One of the questions I hear most from divorcing parents is how the divorce will affect their kids, and so much of that comes down to how the conversation is handled. It works best as a joint decision. Agree with your co-parent ahead of time on timing, who will be in the room, and what will and won't be said, so your kids hear one consistent message.

Regardless of age, kids need to hear the same things from both parents: that the divorce is not their fault and that both parents will keep loving and parenting them. What changes is how you deliver that message, since a five-year-old and a teenager need very different approaches. Swipe through for what that looks like at each age.

If you're bringing in litigation support to draft a motion or brief you'll sign and file, remember your signature carries real weight. Under Florida Rule 2.515(d), signing certifies you've read the filing, verified its accuracy, and stand behind it in good faith. The court holds the signer responsible, regardless of who drafted the work.

Disclosure trips a lot of attorneys up. When a licensed attorney signs and takes responsibility, Florida imposes no duty to disclose that another attorney helped draft it. That requirement only applies when drafting for a self-represented party.

Confidentiality is different. Whatever you share with a litigation support attorney stays protected under Rule 4-1.6, and putting that in writing keeps it explicit for everyone involved.

Trauma-informed practice is a topic I’m extremely passionate about in this work, and Clio recently published a piece that makes the broader case well.

The part that resonates most with me is the point about advocacy. A lawyer is often a client's first real contact with the legal system, and family law clients tend to arrive already carrying a heavy load. When you can recognize a trauma response for what it is and adjust how you show up, your advocacy gets stronger. The article also names something attorneys rarely talk about: the secondary trauma that builds from sitting with other people's hardest moments year after year.

Last week, I stepped behind the curtain at the most magical place on earth and spent three days at the Disney Institute learning Disney's Approach to Leadership Excellence. I was joined by about 40 other professionals representing government agencies, the military, entrepreneurship, non-profits, and companies of every size. On our final day, Mickey handed us our Certificates of Completion. Such a fun way to close out a fantastic and insightful program.

I went into this course looking for fresh tools to sharpen my own leadership and bring it back to the attorneys and small firm owners I coach. Disney has spent decades building a leadership model that holds up under pressure, and I've seen how their approach to culture, service, and team alignment can translate into how a law firm runs. I'm excited to put what I learned to work with my clients!

Thoroughness is one of the best instincts you bring to your work, but without structure, it slides into chronic overwork.

Protecting your time takes a few deliberate habits: blocking your calendar, running a weekly planning review, and holding clear boundaries around when clients can reach you. Those guardrails protect the quality of your legal work and the staying power of your practice at the same time.

The harder discipline is looking honestly at every task you handle yourself that someone else could handle for less. Figuring out what to delegate is one of the most valuable moves a solo practitioner can make, for the health of the practice and for your own.

I'm honored to share that I've been reappointed to the Florida Supreme Court's Steering Committee on Families and Children in the Court, my second term serving in this role.

The committee's charge is to continue building a fully integrated, comprehensive approach to handling cases involving children and families across our state courts. Over the next two years, I'll be working alongside judges, attorneys, and court administrators from across Florida on issues ranging from parent attorney compensation and recruitment to improving how our courts manage and resolve family law cases.

This work sits close to the heart of everything I do in family law and mediation. I'm grateful for the opportunity to keep contributing to it.

One of the things that surprises people most about mediation is how much protection the process gives you to speak openly.

The mediator has no authority to impose a decision. Their job is to guide the conversation and help both sides find workable ground. And the room is confidential. If mediation ends without an agreement and your case goes before a judge, what you said in the session can't be used against you. That protection is part of why mediation moves so many couples toward resolution a courtroom rarely reaches. You can float a compromise or be honest about your priorities without it costing you later.
