We're celebrating Brandon Scheck, our Legal Director, on his five-year anniversary with the Innocence Project of Florida!

Over the past five years, Brandon has helped shape some of the most significant chapters in our organization's history, securing freedom for wrongfully convicted Floridians, advancing complex innocence claims, and helping breathe new life into cases long considered closed. In a legal landscape filled with barriers, he has remained steadfast in the pursuit of justice and hope for those still fighting to prove their innocence.

Beyond the courtroom, Brandon's leadership has strengthened IPF's voice in conversations around wrongful convictions, accountability, and systemic reform across Florida. Through it all, he has never lost sight of what matters most: the people at the heart of this work. Every case represents a person, a family, and years of life impacted by injustice.

As Brandon marks this milestone, his commitment remains rooted in the belief that more innocent people can and will come home. We are grateful for his leadership, his compassion, and his unwavering dedication to justice.

Thank you for five years, Brandon!

Join Midtown Reader and the Innocence Project of Florida for an unforgettable evening with acclaimed journalist Pamela Colloff discussing her chilling debut book, Catch the Devil, in conversation with IPF Executive Director Seth Miller.

Catch the Devil tells the gripping true story of Paul Skalnik, a manipulative con artist whose false testimony helped send innocent people to prison, including Jim Dailey, who spent decades on death row for a crime he did not commit.

This powerful conversation will explore wrongful convictions, the dangers of incentivized testimony, and the urgent need for accountability and justice reform.

This Mother’s Day, we honor all the mothers still fighting to come home to their children and families. We celebrate their strength, resilience, and unwavering hope in the face of unimaginable hardship.

Today, we’re especially honoring Stephanie Spurgeon, the first woman freed by the Innocence Project of Florida and now an invaluable member of our team as a paralegal.

Stephanie lost years of her life to a wrongful conviction for a crime she did not commit, all while being a mother herself. Despite everything, she never stopped fighting for the truth. Today, she continues that fight alongside us, using her lived experience, compassion, and resilience to support others navigating the unimaginable.

We are so lucky to have Stephanie on our team and deeply grateful for the strength, care, and humanity she brings to this work every single day. Happy Mother’s Day, Stephanie, and all the mothers out there still fighting to come home. 💜

We were honored to host a working lunch for the committee leaders of Capital Area Justice Ministry.

Since moving into our larger space, it has been incredibly meaningful to open our doors to the community, creating room not just for meetings, but for connection, collaboration, and shared purpose. There’s something powerful about gathering in one place with people who care deeply about justice, who are committed to showing up for their neighbors, and who are actively working to build a better Tallahassee and beyond.

Moments like these remind us that this work is not done alone. It is built through relationships, through trust, and through people who are willing to come together and do the work. We’re grateful to continue growing alongside leaders and organizations who believe in what’s possible.

Today, we honor the freedom anniversary of Leo Schofield.

On April 30, 2024, Leo walked out of Everglades Correctional Institution after spending more than 36 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. His case, marked by a wholly circumstantial conviction, overlooked evidence, and even a detailed confession from the actual perpetrator, stands as one of the clearest examples of how our system can get it wrong.

But today is not only about what was taken. It’s about what Leo has done since getting it back.

Since his release, Leo has been doing incredible work, sharing his story, speaking truth to injustice, and advocating for others who are still waiting for their second chance. His voice has become a source of power, education, and hope, reminding us that behind every wrongful conviction is a life, a family, and a future worth fighting for.

Leo’s journey was brought to national attention through the award-winning Bone Valley podcast, sparking widespread support and raising urgent questions about accountability and justice. And still, Leo continues to show up, not just for himself, but for others.

Today, we celebrate Leo’s freedom. We honor his resilience. And we recommit ourselves to a world where no one has to wait decades to be heard, believed, and brought home.
