MICHELLE MONTANARO NAMED CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Michelle Montanaro has been promoted after successfully implementing aggressive cost savings measures our Management Committee requested. Thanks to her work our annual overhead per attorney has dropped to only $91,000 and we are debt free.
To put that number in perspective, statewide and regional Am Law 200 law firms like my last firm have per attorney overhead of $180,000 to $220,000 depending on the year. Larger national and international Am Law 100 firms typically have per attorney overhead of $300,000 to $350,000 or more because of the cost of maintaining offices and staff in extremely expensive places like NYC, L.A., London, etc.
Michelle’s efficient management of our operations means lower hourly rates for our clients and higher pay for our lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants. It has become a major factor driving our growth from 0 to 42 lawyers in less than three and half years.
As explained in the article at the link, usually one-third of law firm revenue is eaten up by overhead.

It’s known as the rule of thirds. One-third of revenue to salaries, one-third to overhead, and one-third is profits.
We blew up the conventional law firm financial model with careful outsourcing of back office operations and some other things I’ll be keeping secret. Our $91,000 overhead per attorney is less than 9.5% of our $962,600 revenue per attorney, destroying the rule of thirds at the law firms with a bloated bureaucracy. 90.5% of Lawson revenue will end up in our attorneys’ pockets this year compared to only 50-55% of revenue going to attorney compensation at the other firms.
